Cronavirus not developed as ‘biological weapon’: US intelligence

The coronavirus was not been developed as a “biological weapon,” according to a report by the US intelligence community (IC) on Friday.

“The IC assesses that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, probably emerged and infected humans through an initial small-scale exposure that occurred no later than November 2019 with the first known cluster of COVID-19 cases arising in Wuhan, China in December 2019,” said an unclassified summary of the IC assessment on the origins of the virus that was released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Noting that all agencies assessed two plausible hypotheses — natural exposure to an infected animal and a laboratory-associated incident — the report stressed that the IC remains divided on the most likely origin of the virus.

“Four IC elements and the National Intelligence Council assess with low confidence that the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection was most likely caused by natural exposure to an animal infected with it or a close progenitor virus—a virus that probably would be more than 99 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2,” it said, adding that analysts “give weight” to Chinese officials’ lack of foreknowledge, numerous vectors for natural exposure and other factors.

On the other hand, one IC element assessed “with moderate confidence” that the first human infection of SARS-CoV-2 “most likely” was the result of a laboratory-associated incident, probably involving experimentation, animal handling or sampling by the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“These analysts give weight to the inherently risky nature of work on coronaviruses,” it said.

Meanwhile, analysts at three IC elements “remain unable to coalesce” around either explanation without additional information, with some favoring natural origin, others a laboratory origin and some seeing the hypotheses as equally likely.

The report revealed variations in analytic views largely stem from differences in how agencies weigh intelligence reporting and scientific publications, and intelligence and scientific gaps.

“The IC judges they will be unable to provide a more definitive explanation for the origin of COVID-19 unless new information allows them to determine the specific pathway for initial natural contact with an animal or to determine that a laboratory in Wuhan was handling SARSCoV-2 or a close progenitor virus before COVID-19 emerged.”

It emphasized that the IC and the global scientific community “lacks” clinical samples or a complete understanding of epidemiological data from the earliest COVID-19 cases.

Obtaining information on the earliest cases that identified a location of interest or occupational exposure may alter the evaluation of hypotheses, said the statement.

“China’s cooperation most likely would be needed to reach a conclusive assessment of the origins of COVID-19. Beijing, however, continues to hinder the global investigation, resist sharing information and blame other countries, including the United States,” it said.

The report concluded that the abovementioned actions reflect, in part, the Chinese government’s “own uncertainty” about where an investigation could lead, as well as its “frustration” that the international community is using the issue to exert political pressure on China.

221-22 Europa League groups revealed

The 2021-22 Europa League groups have been unveiled after a draw on Friday that Istanbul hosted.

Before the draw, the 2021 champions Villarreal’s forward Gerard Moreno was named the Europa League player of the 2020-21 season.

The 29-year-old Spaniard scored seven goals in 12 games last season to claim the Europe’s second-tier club trophy.

The Europa League’s format has been changed this season once the third-tier UEFA Europa Conference League was introduced.

The first change was the number of teams to play in this stage so there will be less teams in the 2021-22 season.

UEFA said in a statement on Aug. 16 that the group phase has been reduced from 48 to 32 teams, the eight groups (A-H) of four.

The eight group winners will qualify for the Europa League Round of 16.

“There will be additional knockout round play-offs prior to the round of 16; these will be between the eight UEFA Europa League group runners-up and the eight third-ranked teams of the UEFA Champions League groups,” the UEFA added.

The matches will go on to be played on Thursday except the 2022 final that will be held on May 18 in Seville’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, the home of Sevilla.

This season’s Europa League groups are as follows:

Group A: Olympique Lyon, Rangers, Sparta Prague, Brondby

Group B: Monaco, PSV Eindhoven, Real Sociedad, Sturm Graz

Group C: Napoli, Leicester City, Spartak Moscow, Legia Warsaw

Group D: Olympiakos, Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce, Antwerp

Group E: Lazio, Lokomotiv Moscow, Olympique Marseille, Galatasaray

Group F: Braga, Crvena Zvezda, Ludogorets, Midtjylland

Group G: Bayer Leverkusen, Celtic, Real Betis, Ferencvaros

Group H: Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, West Ham United, Rapid Vienna

There were two Turkish clubs seeded Friday’s draw; Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce will play in Group D to face Olympiakos from Greece, Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt and Belgium’s Antwerp.

Meanwhile Galatasaray, who were the 2000 champions, will take on Italy’s Lazio, Russia’s Lokomotiv Moscow and French club Olympique Marseille in Group E.

The Europa League group stage will kick off Sept. 16.

Cristiano Ronaldo absent from training with Juventus

Juventus reported that Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the morning training session on Friday.

According to the Italian press, the 36-year-old arrived at Juventus’ Continassa Facilities in the morning and left without attending training after staying there for about 40 minutes.

The Italian press announced this development to its readers with the titles “Farewell Day” and “Separation Day,” and Ronaldo’s next address would be with the Premier League club Manchester City.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes managed the process and the only obstacle to the transfer of the star player to The Cityzens was the termination of the contract with Juventus.

According to the news of Corriere dello Sport, it was claimed that Ronaldo and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had a phone call and the experienced coach was eager to see the star player in his team.

It was claimed that Juventus is not willing to let Ronaldo, who has a one-year contract with the club, go without any fee, so Mendes is working for the English team to make an offer of at least €25 million (nearly $29.4 million).

U’ future lies in Indo-Pacific region, say experts

The US’ future lies in the Indo-Pacific, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent visits to Singapore and Vietnam are part of US efforts to strengthen its position in the region, according to foreign policy experts.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ramadhan Muhaimin, a researcher at the Center for Peace and Defense Studies at Indonesia’s Al-Azhar University, said the visit by Harris was aimed at strengthening the US position in the Indo-Pacific to counter Chinese domination.

Muhaimin said the US move to leave Afghanistan was partly driven by the country’s efforts to strengthen its position in the region.

The expert noted that the Indo-Pacific is the “future region” for the US as the country’s economy is dependent on that part of the globe.

“From Kamala Harris’s statement in Singapore, it’s very clear that her visit to Southeast Asia, in this case Vietnam and Singapore, aims to strengthen the United States’ position in the Indo-Pacific,” he said.

The Indo-Pacific region refers to the countries located geographically in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean regions, which is home to 60% of the world’s population with a total GDP of nearly $52 trillion.

During her speech in Singapore on Tuesday, Harris called out China’s continued intimidation and unlawful claims to large parts of the disputed South China Sea.

Harris said those unlawful claims have been rejected by the 2016 arbitral tribunal decision, and Beijing’s actions continue to undermine the rules-based order and threaten the sovereignty of nations.

South China Sea conflict

Meanwhile, in her visit to Vietnam, Harris offered more visits by US warships during her talks with President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, reiterating that China’s expansion is dangerous.

Muhaimin said the US move to approach Vietnam was due to the country’s intense conflict with China in the South China Sea.

“According to reports, Vietnam formed a maritime militia in the South China Sea, numbering around 70,000 fishermen empowered by the government. This was to balance the intensity of Chinese fishermen in the South China Sea,” he said.

Beijing claims roughly 90% of the total area defined by a map with an ambiguous “dash-line” published in 1947, which sparked tensions with several Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam.

Muhaimin said after the visit to Singapore and Vietnam, the US would continue its geopolitical tour in the Indo-Pacific with a different pattern of diplomatic approaches.

“It might be a military diplomacy approach, a diplomatic visit approach, vaccine diplomacy, economic diplomacy, or others,” he added.

In August, Indonesia and the US held a large-scale joint military exercise involving 3,700 troops from both countries.

“Although it was a routine exercise between Indonesian and the US Army, it was held on a larger scale which provoked similar drills between China and Russia,” said Muhaimin.

In the past four years, the US remains the second-largest trade and investment partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The trade volume between the two parties increased by 39% from $211.8 billion to $294.6 billion from 2016 to 2020, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Support for ASEAN against China

On the contrary, an international relations observer from the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, said the US withdrawal from Afghanistan was unrelated to its competition with China.

“The US withdrawal from Afghanistan is taking too long and the costs are too high,” Juwana told Anadolu Agency on Thursday.

According to the international law professor, Harris’ speeches in Singapore and Vietnam were a warning to China and a message for Southeast Asian countries not to be afraid when dealing with Beijing as they will have support from Washington.

“The US wants freedom of navigation and for countries in the Asia Pacific not to fall into China’s debt trap,” he said.

Juwana noted that Harris’ absence in Indonesia does not mean that the country is considered unimportant, saying the US under President Joe Biden’s administration has built cooperation with the country on a concrete level, not symbolic.

He said it was related to the ideology of Biden’s Democrat party, which promotes respect for human rights and democracy.

“For the constituents of the party, it is still difficult to believe that Indonesia has been free from the issue of human rights violations and democratization,” said Juwana, referring to former President Soeharto’s authoritarian era which lasted until the reformation period.

“Therefore, the Biden’s administration still sees Indonesia as important,” he continued.

Indonesia’s human rights record during 2019 was assessed as “declining” by the Human Rights Watch, mostly due to issues of freedom of religion, freedom of expression and assembly, the rights of women and girls, Papua province, environmental rights, and others.

Indonesia’s response

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, said the government cannot make guesses about the considerations behind foreign visits by heads of state.

Faizasyah emphasized the importance of Indonesia to the US when Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi visited Washington DC in early August at the invitation of Secretary of State Antony Blinken to hold a bilateral meeting amid the pandemic.

The spokesman said Marsudi became the first foreign minister from ASEAN member countries to hold an offline bilateral meeting with Blinken in Washington.

“The US secretary of state’s invitation to the Indonesian foreign minister explained two things, first the importance of bilateral relations between the two countries, and second, the US’ view on Indonesia’s strategic position and role in the region,” he added.
