Anti-government protest in Moldova draws thousands

Thousands of people on Sunday gathered for anti-government protests in Moldova's capital Chisinau amid rising cost-of-living.

The protest was organized by the populist Sor Party.

The protesters marched toward the Grand National Assembly Square.

Sporadic clashes broke out from time to time as police tried to stop the march.

According to the local media, some citizens who were brought by buses from other cities to the demonstrations were prevented from entering the city.

The demonstrators demanded that the government cover their electricity and natural gas bills for the December-February period.

Another protest was held in the capital of the Gagauz Autonomous Region, Comrat.

The Interior Ministry reported that 54 people were detained on the grounds that they had banned products with them during the demonstrations.

Director of the country's police Inspector General Viorel Cernauteanu at a press conference claimed that Russian intelligence was behind the protests.

Cernauteanu said that 10 groups consisting of 5-10 people were formed for this purpose and these people were related to the Russian security company Wagner.

According to Cernauteanu, 25 suspects were arrested and seven of them were detained.

Protests broke out in Moldova in Februrary after the resignation of Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita.

The protests take place every weekend.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu at a press conference in February accused Russia of planning subversive actions in Moldova.

The spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mariya Zakharova, denied these accusations and said that Ukraine was trying to pit Moldova against Russia.

‘History will hold Donald Trump accountable’ for Jan. 6 Capitol riots, says former US vice president

Former US Vice President Mike Pence has reproached his one-time boss Donald Trump for wrongdoing, saying history will hold him 'accountable' for the Jan. 6 Capitol attacks.

'President Trump was wrong,' Pence said at the annual Gridiron dinner, a white-tie event attended by journalists and politicians in Washington, D.C.

'I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day. And I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable,' he further said, as reported by the Washington Post.

Trump has long denied the validity of the 2020 election, which he lost by some 7 million votes, claiming rampant fraud. But he has not put forth any evidence to substantiate his claims. His allegations were further rejected by his attorney general, William Barr.

Those allegations motivated droves of Trump's supporters to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from carrying out their constitutionally mandated duty of certifying election results.

Five people died as a result of the violence on Jan. 6, and the Capitol itself was badly damaged. Four law enforcement officers died by suicide in the aftermath.

The attack marked the first time the Capitol had been occupied since British forces torched it during the War of 1812.

NASA SpaceX crew safely return to Earth after over 5-month in space

SpaceX's four-member international crew successfully returned to Earth on Saturday after spending over five months in space, US space agency NASA said on Sunday.

The Crew-5's Dragon spacecraft splashed down off the coast of Tampa, Florida after spending 157 days in orbit, NASA said in a statement on its website.

'NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada, along with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Koichi Wakata and Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina, returned to Earth in a parachute-assisted splashdown at 9:02 p.m. EST,' the statement said.

'Welcome home, Crew-5! This international crew has been conducting critical science experiments and technology demonstrations on the International Space Station that will help prepare us for future deep space missions and pave the way for our return to the Moon,' NASA Administrator Bill Nelson was quoted as saying in the statement.

'Each advancement these explorers make is not an achievement for one, but a giant leap for all of humanity,' Nelson added.

Last October, a Falcon 9 rocket launched the Crew-5 mission from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Around 17 hours later Dragon capsule anchored to the Harmony module's forward-facing port. On Saturday morning, the crew disembarked from the same port to start the voyage back home.

The astronauts 'traveled 66,577,531 miles during their mission, spent 156,5 days aboard the space station, and completed 2,512 orbits around Earth,' it said. 'The Crew-5 mission was the first spaceflight for Mann, Cassada, and Kikina. Wakata has logged 505 days in space over his five flights.'

All means mobilized in Trkiye after powerful quakes, says President Erdogan

Trkiye has mobilized all of its institutions, personnel and resources for disaster-hit areas since the earthquakes in its southern provinces, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.

"No one should have any doubt that all the means of the state and the nation have been mobilized for the earthquake zone," Erdogan said in the quake-hit Hatay's Samandag district.

"We have mobilized our military, police, gendarmerie, healthcare professionals, educators, personnel of all relevant institutions, and all our vehicles, from aircraft to helicopters and ships, for our earthquake victims," he said.

There is no country that can respond faster than Trkiye in the face of such a disaster in which the death toll reached 48,000, the injured exceeded 115,000, and 50,000 buildings were destroyed, he added.

The government plans to complete the construction of the "urgently needed 244,000 houses and 75,000 village houses within a year" in Hatay, he said.

So far, we have set up 426,000 tents in the earthquake zone and we plan to put into service 100,000 containers within two months, he said earlier in Kirikhan, a district in Hatay.

Around half a million people, including public officials, volunteers and members of NGOs, rushed to the quake-hit region to provide help.

More than 47,900 people were killed in Trkiye in the quakes on Feb. 6, according to official figures.

New batch of Pakistani quake relief aid arrives in Trkiye

A new Pakistani cargo plane carrying 90 tons of relief goods, including 1,200 winterized, fire-resistant tents, arrived in quake-hit Trkiye on Sunday.

The relief aid with solidarity message for Turkish people landed at the southern Adana province, according to a statement from the Pakistani Embassy in Ankara.

Khawaja Ahmad Hassan, Pakistani prime minister's special assistant who accompanied the aid, told reporters that Islamabad and Ankara are like 'two hearts, one soul.'

'People of Pakistan felt the same pain and anguish as their Turkish brothers and sisters and are determined to extend every support till full recovery and rehabilitation. Keeping up with glorious history of supporting each other under all circumstances, the Prime Minister is monitoring the earthquake relief assistance from Pakistan himself,' he added.

'Under the directions of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, earthquake relief supplies mainly winterized tents are being transported to brotherly Turkiye through air, land and sea routes,' the statement read.

'The relief operations will continue from Pakistan till the complete rehabilitation of the earthquake victims.'

Sharif was one of the first leaders to visit the affected region to express solidarity with the earthquake survivors.

It was the second aid flight sent to Trkiye for earthquake victims over the past 48 hours, Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority said in a statement earlier on Sunday.

On Saturday, another cargo plane carrying 90 tons of relief goods arrived in Adana.

'Both flights are part of a special air bridge operation which will fly more than 34 chartered cargo aircraft for dispatching tents to Trkiye," the statement added.

A second ship of the Pakistan Navy departed on Saturday with 500 tons of relief supplies for people affected by the twin powerful earthquakes in Trkiye and Syria on Feb. 6.

The ship, PNS Moawin, which departed from Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, is carrying 2,600 winterized tents and 38,000 blankets for Trkiye and 22,000 blankets, ration packets, and generators for Syria.

Last week announced that Pakistan would send 50,000 winterized tents for earthquake victims in Trkiye by March 23.

OIC condemns Israel’s ‘cold-blooded’ killing of 3 Palestinians near Nablus

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday condemned the killing of three Palestinians by Israeli fire near the West Bank city of Nablus earlier this week.

Three Palestinians were killed on Thursday when Israeli forces opened fire on their vehicle in the town of Jaba in Jenin.

Eyewitnesses said Israeli forces carried out the attack after sneaking into the town in a car carrying a Palestinian plate.

In a statement, the Jeddah-based organization termed the deaths of the three Palestinians as 'cold-blooded killing'.

The pan-Islamic grouping 'held the Israeli occupation responsible for the continuation of its heinous crimes against the Palestinian people.'

The OIC renewed its call for the formation of an international commission of inquiry into Israeli attacks and urged the international community 'to intervene urgently to stop these continuous Israeli crimes throughout the occupied Palestinian territory, including the city of Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and to provide international protection for the Palestinian people.'

Tension has escalated across the occupied West Bank in recent months with repeated Israeli attacks on Palestinian towns.

According to Palestinian figures, more than 80 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the beginning of this year. Fourteen Israelis were also killed in separate attacks during the same period.
