Africa-based SME Accelerator Programme Drives Opportunity for Dubai investors with Second Annual Pitch Event

The MultiChoice Africa Accelerator event, staged by African entertainment company MultiChoice Group in partnership with Dubai-based accelerator C3, will see 11 finalists from across Africa pitch for international funding

Dubai, March 09, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Leading African entertainment company MultiChoice Group will today host Middle East and other Global investors at a pitch event for finalists chosen in their MultiChoice Africa Accelerator Programme.

Held in collaboration with technical partner EOH, Galelo Africa and UAE-based social enterprise Companies Creating Change (C3), the programme aims to support the growth and development of SMEs from across the African continent.

While the inaugural event, held at Expo 2020 in January 2022, included only start-ups from South Africa, this year’s iteration has opened up to organisations from more African countries, with finalists from Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Zambia and Ethiopia, along with South Africa. From a base of 29 businesses across 9 African countries, trained by the Accelerator programme in key entrepreneurial skills, 11 have been selected as finalists.  They include:

  • Gradesmatch (South Africa) – helping students and their families transition from education to economic opportunity
  • Botlhale AI (South Africa) – building natural language processing (NLP) tools for African languages
  • Zuri Health (Kenya) – providing affordable and accessible healthcare services to patients across Sub-Saharan Africa via mobile app, website, WhatsApp bot and SMS service
  • Dojah Inc (Nigeria) – end-to-end identity verification and compliance framework to strengthen confidence, credibility, and compliance across digital businesses
  • Crop2Cash (Nigeria) – digital financial service that allows smallholder farmers anywhere in Nigeria to open a bank account on their feature phones in under two minutes, with no internet required
  • Tendo (Ghana) – social commerce platform that enables anyone to sell online with zero capital
  • StarNews Mobile (Ivory Coast) – pan-African media-tech company whose mission is to give financial freedom to African creators from the distribution and monetisation of their digital content globally
  • MaTontine (Senegal) – digitise traditional, African savings groups in order to provide access to financial services for financially excluded women in Africa
  • Taskmoby (Ethiopia) – first digital marketplace in Ethiopia that connects customers with qualified home services providers (e.g. plumbers, cleaners, electricians), leveraging a mobile application, SMS/USSD solutions and a dedicated call centre
  • Mighty Finance Solution Ltd (Zambia) – providing MSMEs in emerging markets with seamless credit and financial solutions using artificial intelligence
  • Tupuca (Angola) – on-demand quick-commerce platform and logistical aggregator of uber-like drivers that allows users to order from multiple vendors and service providers ranging from restaurants, grocery stores, small retailers and courier services

Following the initial training, the 11 finalist start-ups attended a dedicated boot camp in Lusaka, Zambia, to learn more about how to shape their story for international investors, and to get “pitch ready” before their big presentations.

The programme forms part of the MultiChoice Innovation Fund, aiming to connect companies with global investors to unlock business opportunities that will enrich their lives, the communities in which they function and the economy at large.

At a time when unemployment challenges and economic instability are high, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are proving to be the engines of economic growth and job creation throughout the African continent.

The MultiChoice Africa Accelerator Programme specifically targets start-ups and small businesses in the technology sectors of health tech, agritech, fintech, edutech, the circular economy, and creative industries.

Global investors participating on a panel today represent some of the UAE’s leading investors and venture-capital firms including Middle East Venture Partners and WAMDA Capital.

“We were delighted to be able to connect our 2022 finalists with investors in Dubai to unlock $16m worth of funding at Expo 2020,” says Fhulufhelo Badugela, MultiChoice Africa CEO.

“Our vision is to build on the impact that this new cohort of SMEs make in their home markets and multiply it beyond what our start-up founders ever believed possible. I have no doubt these small businesses will be able to take everything they’ve learned so far to unlock transformative business funding.”

The event will be facilitated by C3 – a UAE-based social enterprise with a footprint in 17 countries across the Middle East and Africa.

C3 Managing Director Kevin Holliday commented, “The UAE has long held trade and business connections with the African continent, supported by the leadership of the country. There are so many innovative and inspiring start-ups coming out of Africa that really contribute to both grassroots communities and the economy at large.  The Multichoice Africa Accelerator recognises this and it’s something we’re really happy to be able to support.”

Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO Set Global Standards for Climate Neutral Energy Supply by 2035

  • Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO plan to achieve climate neutrality at the coastal power plant in Kiel by 2035. • As the world’s first 190 MW large-scale engine-based combined heat and power plant, the coastal power plant is planned to be converted to hydrogen operations. • 20 Jenbacher engines are to be converted to run on green hydrogen.

KIEL, GERMANY / ACCESSWIRE / March 8, 2023 / Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO are working on the conversion of the coastal power plant in Kiel that will allow the facility to operate on 100% green hydrogen (H2) by 2035, ten years ahead of the German government’s climate targets. With this, Europe’s most advanced large-scale engine-based combined heat and power plant is setting new global standards for climate-neutral energy supply. An important requirement for keeping to the ambitious schedule is that sufficient green hydrogen is available in time and on economic terms. Today, both companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the project.

“We need flexible backup power plants so that Kiel and Germany can be securely supplied with power – especially when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine. There is no getting around this basic law of physics,” asserts Dr. Jörg Teupen, Board Member for Technology and Personnel at Stadtwerke Kiel AG. “In order to achieve climate neutrality for this type of power plant operation, hydrogen must be readily available to us. However, this is dependent on Europe having an abundance of hydrogen available over the coming years,” continues Teupen.

The two companies’ joint ambition is founded upon the “Eight-Point Program: Route to Climate Neutrality” established by Stadtwerke Kiel AG, the energy supplier pushing ahead with the energy transition with this program. With the original aim to be fully climate neutral in the generation of power and district heating by 2040 at the latest, the energy supplier has now brought this date forward by five years to 2035 based on its hydrogen project.

“We are setting new global standards in collaboration with Stadtwerke Kiel. The coastal power plant in Kiel is the first of its kind globally whose technology could theoretically be converted to green hydrogen today. Nevertheless, for the conversion to happen no later than 2035, policymakers need to put the correct framework in place right now,” says Dr. Olaf Berlien, president and CEO of INNIO.

The Stadtwerke Kiel coastal power plant supplies more than 73,500 homes with eco-friendly district heating and also generates electricity for the region. In doing so, the highly flexible large-scale engine-based combined heat and power plant ensures there is a secure and environmentally friendly supply of energy. INNIO’s Jenbacher engines are the first hydrogen engines at megawatt scale. The company, based in Tyrol, Austria, is among the first to be able to convert the majority of its installed engines to run on green hydrogen. The conversion of Jenbacher engines from natural gas to green hydrogen will result in the advanced, flexible coastal power plant becoming entirely climate neutral by 2035.

Ankara condemns anti-Türkiye activity by PKK/YPG terrorist group in European Parliament

Ankara "strongly condemned" an anti-Türkiye activity by ringleaders, and supporters of the PKK/PYD/YPG terrorist group in the European Parliament building, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

“It is unacceptable to allow such an activity that targets our country's integrity, and serves the propaganda of a terrorist organization that is listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union," a ministry statement said.

This situation once again reveals the "hypocrisy and insincerity of the European Parliament in the fight against terrorism," it added.

Türkiye expects EU institutions and member states to stand by it in its fight against terrorism, which poses a threat to international security, the statement said.

"Allowing this activity, which is intended to gain legitimacy by mentioning the name of our country, also contradicts the international obligations of the EU," it added.

Türkiye will "resolutely continue its fight against all terrorist organizations without discrimination," the Foreign Ministry said.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people.

Philippines’ Bangsamoro adopts electoral code

Bangsamoro has formally adopted an electoral code, seen as another step toward cementing the foundation for the establishment of an autonomous region in the southern Philippines.

Murad Ebrahim, chief executive of the Muslim-majority region, told Anadolu over the phone on Thursday that the Bangsamoro parliament "finally adopted the election code" late Wednesday night.

"The bill was adopted around 12 last night (1600GMT) last night," he said.

The regional government is run by Bangsamoro Transitional Authority (BTA), led by Ebrahim, who was elected as the first chief minister in Feb. 2019 and reappointed last August for a second term until 2025, when the first elections are scheduled.

Ebrahim said the electoral code was passed during an extended session of the 80-member parliament.

“There was no objection, and 67 (lawmakers) voted for with no abstention or opposition,” he said, adding that several lawmakers were not present during the session because “they were either out of the country or not available.”

In 2018, a decades-long insurgency by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) led to peace negotiations with the Philippines government, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was formed in the southern Philippines.

The Bangsamoro parliament has 41 MILF nominees, while the remaining 39 are picked by the national government in Manila.

“We got the majority,” Ebrahim said of the electoral code.

The chief minister said work is still going on two other codes, one for local governance and another for revenue.

“The local governance code is in the stage of consultation, while the revenue code is waiting for cabinet approval,” Ebrahim explained.

The election codes will serve as the legal framework for the structure, function, procedure, and principles of elections in the autonomous region, which is home to nearly five million people.

The Bangsamoro autonomous government will have six codes, three of which, the Bangsamoro Administrative Code, Bangsamoro Civil Service Code, and Bangsamoro Education Code, were adopted during the first term of the MILF government.

“These are among the six codes that should be passed during the transition period,” he said.

The incumbent government and parliament were reappointed last August, with 39 of the 80 members being new faces, while the rest were reappointed from the last parliament.

Western countries sow wars, confusion in Libya by donating arms: Council president

The wars and confusion in Libya were brought about by Western countries which instead of donating items like books, computers and medicine to the country sent arms in large amounts, the president of the Afro Arab Youth Council said Wednesday.

Abdul Haddi Elhwegi, who hails from Libya, told Anadolu that the amount of guns in the country far exceeds its population.

“The problem in Libya is the big number of weapons in the country which are in the hands of groups and individuals .Our population is 7 million, but there are 21 million guns in the country. On average, every Libyan has three guns. They do not give us computers and books but only give us weapons,” he said.

Elhwegi called on all African youths to work for peace and development so that Africa becomes a great continent.

“In Africa, we have a lot of natural resources and a good climate. But instead of supporting us to develop, the donor countries have made us a marketplace for their weapons,” he said.

Elhwegi is among the international delegates that are in Uganda to celebrate the 19th anniversary of the Afro Arab Youth Council. They visited Mpoma Girls Secondary School to show solidarity with African girls during International Women’s Day.

Other delegates who visited the girls school were Muslim youth leaders from Egypt, Morocco, Sudan and Nigeria.

Led by the Secretary General of the Afro Arab Youth Council, Abbas Agaba, they planted trees at the school after delivering inspiring speeches to the students.

Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria claims it foiled Ukraine’s attack on leadership

Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region on Thursday accused Ukraine of carrying out an attack on its leadership and said that the attack has been thwarted.

“The crime, on the directives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), was prepared against a number of officials,” said a statement by the breakaway region's State Security Ministry.

It said that the suspects of the alleged attack were detained and that an investigation has been launched.

Separately, Transnistria’s prosecutor Anatoliy Guretskiy claimed that the alleged attack aimed to take out the leadership of Transnistria.

"The place where the attack was supposed to take place indicates that the calculation was, firstly, to eliminate the first persons of the state. In addition, no less, the calculation was for a large number of victims,” Guretskiy claimed.?

Meanwhile, the SBU denied its involvement in the alleged attack and declared the claims as "nonsense", saying that its dissemination shows "a clear goal of Russia to destabilize the situation in the territory that is actually occupied and under its control."

"Any statements by representatives of the so-called 'Ministry of State Security' of the fake 'Pridnestrovian People's Republic' regarding the participation of the SBU in the preparation of the terrorist attack should be considered exclusively as a provocation orchestrated by the Kremlin," a statement by the SBU said.

Transnistria is an unrecognized breakaway region internationally recognized as part of Moldova but is currently controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

US House votes against resolution to pull American troops out of Syria

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US House of Representatives voted Wednesday against a resolution directing the Biden administration to withdraw all US troops from Syria.

The war powers resolution was submitted by Florida Republican Matt Gaetz and was rejected in a 103-321 vote, with 47 Republicans and 56 Democrats voting "Yes."

The bill cited section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, directing President Joe Biden to remove US armed forces from Syria within 180 days after the adoption of the resolution.

Among the Republicans who backed Gaetz's resolution were Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Andy Biggs of Arizona and Anna Paulina Luna of Florida.

In his address to the House, Gaetz questioned how Syria has become "the great platform of great power competition in the world."

Recalling that security forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad opened fire when anti-government protests erupted in the country in 2011, he said there were "a whole lot of weapons and money being sent from the rich Gulf monarchies through Jordan into Syria."

Accusing Iran of "activating Hezbollah" and "invading Syria," he noted that Russia is also "pitching their vision of the world as a regime preservation force."

He added that Israel cut "a deal with Russia to keep Iran out of southern Syria."

"Now, all of a sudden you've got the Kurds who declare war on Syria, and it makes it a little messy that the Kurds are also in conflict with Turkey, which is a NATO ally," he continued.

Adding that the US got involved in “this mess in Syria” in 2015, he said: "And since we have been there, we have seen Americans die, we have seen tens of billions of dollars wasted."

On the fight against Daesh/ISIS, Gaetz said he would encourage his colleagues to "go read the inspector general's report of the last quarter, which indicates that ISIS is not a threat to the homeland,” also noting that Türkiye is conducting operations against Daesh/ISIS in Syria.

"I do not believe what stands between a caliphate and not a caliphate are the 900 Americans who have been sent to this hellscape with no definition of victory, no clear objective, and purely existing as a vestige to the regime-change failed foreign policies of multiple former presidents," he said.

Some 900 US troops are currently deployed in Syria, and US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley visited northern Syria this weekend.

According to US media reports, reporters traveling with Milley asked if he believed the deployment of around 900 US troops to Syria was worth the risk.

“If you think that that's important, then the answer is 'Yes,’” he said.

The top US general's visit to the region in northeastern Syria occupied by the YPG/PKK terrorist group sparked tensions between the two NATO allies with US ambassador to Türkiye Jeff Flake summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Monday over the visit.
