Serbia’s search, rescue team returns from quake-hit Türkiye

A Serbian search and rescue team returned Friday after spending last week in Türkiye, which was hit by twin earthquakes on Feb. 6.

The 45-member team and one dog returned with field vehicles from southern Hatay province.

They were welcomed by Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic and Turkish Ambassador to Belgrade Hami Aksoy with a national ceremony at the Serbian Palace.

Gasic said the team saved three people and helped in operations for eight days.

He added that Serbia will always extend a helping hand to friends who need it.

Aksoy said it is a historic day for the relations.

"Today is a very meaningful day. I can say that it is the most important day in terms of Turkey-Serbia relations. When the earthquake happened on Feb. 6, the next day I spoke to the minister (Bratislav Gasic) and that evening this team set out for Türkiye. (The team) was in the field right after the earthquake and started search and rescue efforts,'' he said.

Aksoy added that Serbia proved it is a friendly state and nation to Türkiye in bright and dark days.

"Serbia has shown that it is a true friend of Turkey. Serbia has helped us as a whole country, with both in-kind and cash donations,'' said Aksoy.

The leader of the search and rescue team, Davor Vidovic, said the team’s only thought was to save lives.

"We set out with the hope that we could save people's lives without fear and without being in a dilemma. We stepped on lands that were constantly shaken by earthquakes, parents were looking for their children, children were looking for their families. None of us can describe the joy we felt when we found a 17-year-old girl alive under the rubble,'' said Vidovic.

Turkish Ambassador to Montenegro's capital of Podgorica, Baris Kalkavan, said 27 tons of aid was sent to quake zones.

"So far, approximately 400,000 euros ($426.96) in cash aid has been collected. We have seen once again how close the Montenegrin people are to the Turkish people," said Kalkavan.

A team of 53 search and rescue personnel from Montenegro served in Türkiye.

Türkiye issued a level-4 alert, calling for international aid.

More than 249,000 search and rescue personnel are currently working in the field, according to Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

More than 9,000 international search and rescue teams, including those from South Korea, have participated in the post-quake operations.

Around 100 countries have offered assistance so far, with many having sent rescue teams.

More than 38,000 people have been killed by the two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye, the country's disaster agency said Friday.

The 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude quakes were centered in Kahramanmaras and struck 10 other provinces -- Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, Kilis, Osmaniye, Elazig and Sanliurfa. More than 13 million people have been affected by the devastating quakes.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in less than 10 hours.

Russia sees no change in ties with new Moldovan government

Russia does not expect any changes in relations with Moldova following the formation of a new government.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on its website on Saturday that 11 of the previous cabinet's 15 ministers retained their seats in the new Moldovan government led by “pro-Western” economist Dorin Recean.

According to the ministry, "Western supervisors" use in Moldova methods that have been tested in the Baltic States and Ukraine, such as a ban on unwanted media and political, trade, economic, and humanitarian contacts with Russia, persecution of political opponents, restrictions on the use of the Russian language, attempts to falsify common Russian-Moldovan history and departure from neutral status.

"Such a political course of the Moldovan authorities does not meet the interests of our peoples," the ministry said.

The diplomatic service regretted that the process of forming the new government was accompanied by an anti-Russian campaign based on allegations of Moscow's plan to destabilize the situation in the country received from Ukraine.

"We are convinced that none of the sane people in Moldova believed this next fake... For our part, we remain open to the development of constructive and pragmatic bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the citizens of Russia and Moldova," the ministry said.

Bosnians to stand with Türkiye in wake of ‘terrible disaster’: Foreign minister

Bosnia and Herzegovina's foreign minister said Friday that Bosnians will stand with Türkiye which has been devastated by two strong earthquakes.

“Stay strong, we pray for you, we are with you. We will stand together in this terrible disaster. You have proven once again how great the Turkish nation is,” Elmedin Konakovic told Anadolu in Hatay province.

Konakovic said it was difficult to talk after what he witnessed in Hatay, one of the most affected regions by the quakes.

"I have never seen anything like this before. I was a soldier in the Bosnian army during the war … but I was shocked for the first time,” he said.

He said more than 200 first responders working in the region did an excellent job and noted that they rescued 26 people from the rubble.

"We are not a very powerful or big country but Bosnians have a big heart and our people once again showed that they are with the Turkish people in this crisis,” he said, adding that 50 humanitarian aid trucks are headed to quake victims.

Konakovic said a 12-year-old boy is trying to help victims by selling tea on the street – an act that proved how Bosnians reacted very quickly to the disaster.

Benjamin Mehanovic who lives in the capital, Sarajevo, is selling tea to help Turkish and Syrian quake-hit victims. It is a gesture the Turkish foreign minister has praised.

At least 38,044 people have been killed by the two strong quakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Feb. 6, the country's disaster agency said Friday.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the tremors that struck in the space of less than 10 hours.

Some historical landmarks spared in quake-hit Turkish city of Kahramanmaras

The urban center of Kahramanmaras, the province at the epicenter of devastating earthquakes in southern Türkiye earlier this month, suffered widespread damage in the strong tremors, with many buildings collapsing in the centuries-old city.

Some major streets leading to the heart of the city, home to many historical sites, have been closed off by the rubble of buildings that collapsed in the quakes, which claimed thousands of lives in southern Türkiye.

As debris is removed, however, residents have regained road access to the Grand Bazaar, dating back half a millennium, which itself was nearly unscathed by the earthquakes. In fact, some businesses have started reopening their doors to help people feel like "life will return to normal."

Ali Gul, who owns an underwear shop in the bazaar, told Anadolu that no destruction had befallen its long covered streets.

"Generally, our premises are in good condition, but some items fell off the shelves and we came to pick them up from the floor. Now, we'll slowly try getting back to normal," Gul said as one of his neighbors lifted their shutters to see the state of their shop.

While the shops and roof of the bazaar escaped much of the harm, local people were severely shaken mentally by the earthquakes, according to Gul, who added that the reopening of businesses heartened many.

"Our businesses being open boosts the morale of the people. We're trying to normalize to get rid of these tough times. It's surely different to walk past a closed shop and an open shop," Gul said.

The shop owner called on other businesses to open their doors and stay open even if they weren't making any sales.

"People are in need of encouragement. An open shop always means a living city. We've got to bring this dead city back to life."

Right next to the Grand Bazaar, a museum dedicated to the province's famed ice cream and an Ottoman-era mansion exhibiting the 19th-century lifestyle also suffered little damage other than some fallen roof tiles.

Not so fortunate, half of the minaret of the 15th-century Maras Grand Mosque, which marks the center of the city, was lost in the disaster, with the falling debris causing some damage near the entrance of the historical mosque.

Daily prayer services have since been put on hold due to the damage, while weekly Friday prayers have been held outside.

Located a few meters down, the 15th-century mosque Tasmescit and the Cukur Turkish bath of the same era have also sustained no damage.

Taiwanese rescue team’s interpreter recalls selfless efforts to save lives in Türkiye

An interpreter for a Taiwanese rescue team recalled selfless efforts to save lives in southern Türkiye that was struck by twin earthquakes on Feb. 6.

“We do not have any time to rest, we're taking action right away. We came here for this. What else can we do here? Let’s not loaf around!” Elif Yi Ying Wang said, recalling the first words of Taiwanese first responders.

"The team was very professional. It was clear who was going to do what. Everything was systematic. They brought everything themselves. In order not to be a burden to the people here, they even brought their own food" she told Anadolu.

Taiwan rushed to help Türkiye in the wake of the devastating quakes. A team of 130 people made up of a doctor, nurse, and technical experts were accompanied by five search and rescue dogs.

The team took action on the first day of the quake. They arrived in Adiyaman province after 15 hours of air and ground travel.

Wang, who lives in Istanbul, immediately contacted Taiwanese diplomatic mission representatives to be part of the efforts.

After receiving approval from Taiwanese authorities, Wang took the road to the southern province. She said she had to wait two hours to refuel in the nation’s capital of Ankara as people flocked to the region to give support.

"All of Türkiye was heading there. I was so touched by that," she said.

After the long journey, Wang eventually met the team in Adiyaman.

"The team worked in different areas in Adiyaman. A member of the team said he worked 34 hours straight. 'Is not it too much?' I asked. ‘There were so many people on every street that I couldn't resist. That's what we came for.’"

She said a second 30-member team also arrived in Adiyaman.

The Taiwanese rescue team cooperated well with victims and Turkish teams, she said.

Touched by dialogues between members of the team and victims, Wang said the victims constantly found ways to thank the efforts of the team. The team would respond with a Turkish expressions they learned, such as “Allah yardimciniz olsun,” Turkish for, “God help you all.”

Members of the team worked devotedly, she said, adding; “They also treated the Turks who were injured during the search and rescue efforts.”

They were very pleased with the hospitality displayed by Turkish people, she said, noting that the members of the team want to come back to Türkiye next year.

The 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude earthquakes, centered in the Kahramanmaras province, affected more than 13 million people across 11 provinces.

More than 38,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured.
