360 Scholarships to Accelerate Sustainability Education for Young Women Worldwide

NEW YORK, Feb. 4, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Available to young women (ages 15-17.5) around the world, applications are now open for the AFS Global STEM Accelerators: a full-scholarship virtual exchange program in sustainability, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), and positive social impact.

Global Stem Accelerators’ voices echo the desire for a brighter and more inclusive future.

The program is run by AFS Intercultural Programs, a global non-profit intercultural exchange network with more than 75 years’ experience in international education. AFS received Diversity Abroad’s 2022 Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) Award for the Accelerators’ successful inauguration. 20% of the scholarships will be allocated specifically for refugees and girls from displaced populations, whether from war, violence, or natural disaster.

The Accelerators program is part of a broader five-year scholarship initiative aimed at reaching 5,000 young people worldwide, with a focus on supporting women. The initiative is funded by bp, and the curricula is co-developed by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. AFS conducts outreach with support from SPARK, an international NGO that creates pathways for young people, particularly women and refugees, in fragile communities worldwide. The program also provides internet and technical support for users in need.

Previous scholarship awardees reflect the diversity the program was designed to embrace: 20% were refugees or displaced persons; 82% identified as People of Color; 51% were from low-income households; and 10% are set to be the first in their families to graduate from high school.

AFS scholars’ voices echo the desire for a brighter and more inclusive future: “I am from a traditional society where girls don’t even have the right to go to school,” says Harira, a participant from Afghanistan. “Participating in this program is my first step toward achieving my goal to explore the world and become influential in improving sustainable societies.”

The Accelerators program culminates with scholars developing social impact capstone projects and presentations that offer potential solutions to real-world challenges, with an emphasis on sustainability. Participants earn the Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact, awarded by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania.

Russia’s Bryansk region declares high-level terror alert

The authorities of Russia's Bryansk oblast declared on Friday a high-level terror alert in the region.

"Due to the information of law enforcement agencies about the ongoing threat of a terrorist act, in order to organize activities to counteract its commitment, by the decision of the chairman of the anti-terrorist commission of the Bryansk region, the Governor of the Bryansk region, a high (yellow-elevated) level of terrorist danger was established on the territory of the Bryansk region from 14:00 on February 3, 2023," the statement said.

Bryansk authorities explained the necessity of the security regime in the wake of a possible attack by Ukraine.

EU officially supports Ukrainian Peace Formula: Volodymr Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that the EU officially supports a Ukrainian Peace Formula.

He noted that Ukraine's integration process with the EU continues and was the main topic discussed at a Ukraine-EU summit.

"We have quite specific agreements with our partners on how Ukraine will become even closer to the EU," said Zelenskyy. "We have preserved Ukrainian freedom. We're protecting the values of Ukraine. And we will achieve the goals of our state to be part of Europe."

Emphasizing that the EU also supported a 10-point peace formula prepared by Ukraine last year to end the war, he said: "The EU officially supported the Ukrainian peace formula today. This was recorded in the final declaration of the summit," he said.

Zelenskyy noted that the US decided to provide additional military aid to his country, including long-range rockets launched from the ground and he thanked US President Joe Biden for his support for Ukraine.

China grants debt service moratorium to Sri Lanka

China said Friday it granted a moratorium on debt repayment by economic crisis-hit Sri Lanka.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the Export-Import Bank of China, as the official bilateral creditor, “provided a financing support document” to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies on Jan. 19.

“The Bank is going to provide an extension on the debt service due in 2022 and 2023, which means Sri Lanka will not have to repay the principal and interest due of the Bank’s loans during the above-mentioned period, so as to help relieve Sri Lanka’s short-term debt repayment pressure,” Mao said at a news conference in Beijing.

The Bank would have “consultation with Sri Lanka regarding medium- and long-term debt treatment in this window period,” according to a transcript of the news conference released by China’s Foreign Ministry,

“The Bank will make best efforts to contribute to the debt sustainability of Sri Lanka,” said Mao, adding that the Chinese lender will “support” Sri Lanka in its loan application to the International Monetary Fund (IMF.)

Sri Lanka, crippled by a shortage of foreign exchange reserves after the collapse of the tourism-dependent economy, defaulted on all its foreign debt in 2021.

The country of 22 million people has been unable to pay for food, fuel and other necessities, with a fuel shortage causing daily power outages.

The Chinese official called on commercial creditors, including the International Sovereign Bondholders, to “provide debt treatment in an equally comparable manner, and encourage multilateral creditors to do their utmost to make corresponding contributions.”

“China calls on all other creditors of Sri Lanka, especially multilateral creditors, to take synchronized, similar steps and give effective, strong support to Sri Lanka to help the country emerge from its default status at an early date,” said Mao as she urged the IMF to “take into full consideration the urgency of the situation in Sri Lanka and provide loan support as soon as possible to relieve the country’s liquidity strain.”

“Going forward, China will continue to support relevant financial institutions in actively working out the debt treatment. We will work with relevant countries and international financial institutions to jointly play a positive role in helping Sri Lanka navigate the situation, ease its debt burden and achieve sustainable development,” she added.

Kremlin spokesman calls reports ‘fake’ concerning US offer to exchange Ukraine territories for peace

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized reports as "fake" that said the US offered Ukraine to give up 20% of its territory in exchange for peace with Russia.

"It's a fake," Peskov said at a news conference and in response to a question if CIA head William Burns visited Russia in January, he said: "In January? The entire report is fake."

Concerning claims that Ukraine's Interior Ministry started forming assault troops for an offensive in Donbas and Crimea, Peskov said Donbas "is not fully protected," which is the reason why Russia's "special military operation" continues.

He said border points with Mongolia and Georgia were temporarily closed because of weather conditions and there are no reasons to doubt the information.

Peskov said Moscow is against a Western embargo on deliveries of Russian oil products taking effect Feb. 5 and it will lead to a further imbalance of energy markets.

"Naturally, we are taking measures to hedge our interests from the risks that arise in this regard," said Peskov.

Commenting on remarks by Serbian President Alexandr Vucic, who said Serbia may one day have to join anti-Russian sanctions, he said: "We are well aware of the unprecedented pressure that the leadership of Serbia is under from the collective West."

He said Russia "highly appreciates" the position of Serbian leadership and hopes bilateral relations will continue to develop upward.

In November, EU energy ministers agreed on a gas price cap of €180 ($190) per megawatt hour in the bloc, weeks after imposing an embargo on seaborne imports of Russian crude oil at a price cap of $60 per barrel starting Dec. 5.

An EU ban on imports of petroleum products from Russia will take effect Feb. 5.

Chinese spy balloon undermined high-level visit, says top US diplomat

China's decision to send a surveillance balloon into US airspace undermined a long-planned high-level visit to Beijing, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday.

The top diplomat was slated to fly to Beijing for meetings with senior Chinese officials this weekend after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to the trip during their sit-down in November, but the discovery of the aircraft by the US on Thursday nixed those plans, adding to already frayed US-Sino relations.

"This is an unacceptable as well as an irresponsible action. It's even more irresponsible coming on the eve of a long-planned visit that followed from the meeting between the two presidents in Bali on the margins of the G 20," Blinken told reporters during a news conference with South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin.

"And, in our judgment, it created conditions that undermine the very purpose of the trip, including ongoing efforts, as I said, to build a floor under the relationship as well as to address a very broad range of issues that are important to Americans, to Chinese, to the entire world," he added.

Blinken morning phoned China's top official for foreign affairs, Wang Yi, on Friday to formally notify Beijing of the postponement and convey Washington's displeasure directly.

China has since issued a mea culpa for the incident, saying the aircraft is a "civilian airship used for research" that deviated off course and entered US airspace.

Two State Department officials who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity noted Beijing's statement of regret but said "the presence of this balloon in our airspace is a clear violation of our sovereignty as well as international law. And it is unacceptable that this has occurred."

The Pentagon determined the balloon is a reconnaissance aircraft, a point reiterated by Blinken, in what is a stark deviation from China's explanation. It remains in US airspace but at a high enough altitude that it is not a threat to commercial aircraft.

A senior defense official said Thursday that the balloon was "clearly" intended for surveillance and entered US airspace a couple of days ago.

“We had been looking at whether there was an option yesterday” to take down the balloon “over some sparsely populated areas in Montana, but we just couldn't buy down the risk enough to feel comfortable recommending shooting it down yesterday,” the official added.
