Russia says it destroyed aircraft engine workshop in southeastern Ukraine

“A high-precision attack launched by the Russian Aerospace Forces on the Motor Sich defense industrial entity has resulted in the destruction of the workshop tasked with assembling engines for aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force,” it said in a statement.

The airstrike on the workshop was also mentioned during a video briefing by Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.

The development comes as explosions were reported at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by Russia and Ukraine as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) early Sunday.

The Russian state news agency TASS reported that 15 explosions were recorded at the plant, citing claims by Renat Karchaa, an adviser to Rosenergoatom, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom.

Ukraine’s nuclear agency Energoatom later claimed that the Russian military hit facilities within the plant 12 times.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called for an end to shelling near the nuclear power plant, saying “whoever is behind this, it must stop immediately. As I have said many times before, you’re playing with fire.”

China reports 2 more COVID-19 deaths

Two fresh deaths due to the coronavirus were reported in the capital Beijing, the Chinese daily Global Times reported.

China reported the first death, of an 87-year-old man who died of sepsis triggered by a serious lung infection, in the past six months on Saturday. However, the health authorities released the information on Sunday. This was the country’s first recorded fatality from the virus since May 26.

National Health Commission said on Monday that a woman, 91, and a man, 88, “who were diagnosed with mild COVID-19 symptoms but with severe underlying diseases,” died at Beijing Ditan Hospital on Sunday.

Since the first cases were reported in December 2019, China has reported 286,197 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 5,229 deaths.

The number of cases increased due to the spread of highly contagious sub-variants. In the last five days, the number of daily cases has surpassed 20,000.

Although the number of cases is minimal in comparison to the population, and the majority of them display no symptoms, China continues to execute severe pandemic control measures.

Rockets fired into southeastern Türkiye, injuring 8 security personnel

The rocket fired by members of the YPG/PKK terror group in Tal Rifat, northern Syria hit a Police Special Operations station located at the Kilis Oncupinar Border Gate in the Kilis province.

Turkish Interior Ministry said that one police commissioner and six police personnel were among the injured police officials.

The terrorist YPG/PKK has illegal hideouts across the border in northern Syria – a region partially under opposition control, and partially under terrorist control – where they plan and mount attacks against Türkiye.

Ambulances and security forces were dispatched to the Kilis border region.

Kilis Governor Recep Soyturk later visit the wounded being treated in hospital.

Separately, YPG/PKK terrorists in northern Syria fired four rockets into Karkamis in the southeastern Gaziantep province.

The rockets hit an empty area, and an investigation of the attack has begun.

The attacks came after Türkiye announced early Sunday that it had launched an air operation against the PKK/YPG terror group in both northern Syria and northern Iraq, where the terrorist group also has hideouts where they plot and mount attacks against Türkiye.

The operation follows last Sunday’s terror attack on Istanbul’s crowded Istiklal Avenue that killed at least six people and left 81 injured.

The Turkish government said the attack was carried out by the terrorist group PKK/YPG.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG is the terror group’s Syrian offshoot.
