Lebanese parliament fails again to elect new president

Lebanese lawmakers on Thursday failed for the fifth time to elect a new president, threatening to deepen the country’s political and economic crises.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun left office on Oct. 31 after his 6-year term expired without lawmakers agreeing on a successor.

Candidate Michel Mouawad, backed by the Lebanese Forces Party, got only 44 votes in Thursday’s session, which was attended by 108 members of the 128-seat assembly.

To win in the first round of voting, two-thirds of lawmakers in the 128-member assembly are needed, after which a simple majority suffices.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri set the next session for November 17.

In Lebanon, the president is limited to a single six-year term.

Lebanon has been going through a deep economic crisis since 2019. The country has already been without a fully functioning government since May.

Former Pakistani premier’s party resumes its ‘long march’ to capital

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party resumed its anti-government march toward the capital Islamabad on Thursday, after it was halted following an assassination attempt on him on the same day last week.

The march resumed from the point where Khan was attacked and wounded in the Wazirabad district of northeastern Punjab province governed by his center-right Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

Khan, who was shot in both legs and received four bullets and shrapnel, is not leading the march. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the party’s vice chairman and a former foreign minister, is leading the march in his absence.

Addressing a sizeable number of protesters via video link from his home in the Zaman Park neighborhood of Lahore, Punjab’s capital, Khan said his “long march” will continue “whatever comes.”

“I am not fighting for myself. I am fighting for the rule of law and justice in this country. That’s why all the forces have got united against me,” Khan contended.

“The attack on me was planned and aimed at getting rid of me. But let me tell them that until I am alive, I will continue this struggle. I won’t step back,” he added.

Fate of march hangs in balance

Hundreds of PTI supporters protested the assassination attempt on their leader by blocking several roads in Rawalpindi and Lahore, including a major highway connecting Lahore and Islamabad.

The blockade suspended traffic from and to Islamabad, as the stick-wielding protesters burned tires and placed chairs and wooden barriers to block the roads at several points.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, for his part, warned that the public may “react” to a “handful” PTI workers’ continuous road blockade.

In a statement, he accused the provincial governments of Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, both of which are governed by the PTI, of “facilitating” the protesters’ roadblocks.

Khan, who kicked off the “long march” on Oct. 28 in an attempt to press the government for snap elections, was attacked last Thursday by what appeared to be a lone gunman, who fired a volley of bullets at him.

At least one person was killed and another 13 injured in the brazen attack. The suspected attacker is in police custody and being interrogated.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government, rejecting Khan’s demand, says there will be no early voting and that the next elections will be held as scheduled in late 2023.

The march is likely to reach the garrison city of Rawalpindi, which borders Islamabad, in the third week of this month, as the PTI has not given a specific date for protesters’ arrival near the capital.

Khan says he will join and lead the march once it reaches Rawalpindi.

Many see the appointment of the new chief of the country’s powerful army, which is due before Nov. 29, as the source of this indecision. Khan accuses current Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa of “playing neutral” during a successful no-trust move against him in April.

Khan was deposed as prime minister after parliament passed a no-confidence vote.

He blames his unceremonious ouster on a US-backed conspiracy, an allegation that Islamabad and Washington have repeatedly refuted.

Khan, the country’s 19th prime minister, took office in August 2018 and ruled for just over three and a half years.

England crush India to reach T20 World Cup cricket final

ANKARA (AA) – A dominant England crushed fancied India by 10 wickets in a one-sided clash at a packed Adelaide cricket stadium on Thursday to secure their berth in the final of the Twety20 Cricket World Cup in Australia.

Blazing knocks studded with a flurry of boundaries and sixes from skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales powered England to chase a healthy 169-run target with ease in the 16th over.

The duo completely destroyed the Indian bowling attack, which buckled under the weight of expectations and looked totally unimpressive throughout the game.

It, more or less, looked like a practice match for the fiery English pair, who played strokes on all sides of the ground with total dominance.

Hales, named man of the match, hit a blistering 86-run knock off 49 balls, while Buttler took only 47 balls to score 80 runs.

On Sunday, England will face Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in what many expect to be a “repeat telecast” of the 1992 world cup when the green shirts defeated the red shirts at the same venue to clinch their first world cup.

As Buttler hit the winning shot – a towering six into the stands on mid-on – English fans and players hugged and greeted one another.

Whereas, the Indian fans who packed the stadium in anticipation of a victory, were disappointed by their team’s embarrassing performance.

Many of them even left the stadium in the middle and last moments of the game, which appeared to be a total shock for not only tens of millions of Indian fans back home, but for Pakistanis who expected a “dream final” against archrival in Melbourne.

Earlier, the English captain won the toss and chose to field.

The Blue shirts got off to a bad start when opener KL Rahul was caught behind off Chris Woakes in the second over for five runs after beginning with a cracking boundary off English pacer Ben Stokes.

Out-of-form Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who hit four boundaries after a scratchy start, tried to build the inning with in-form Virat Kohli, but Chris Jordan ended the partnership in his first over.

Then came fiery Hardik Pandya, who, along with Kohli, propelled India to post a decent total of 168 for 6.

Pandya took only 33 deliveries to hit blazing 63 runs studded with four boundaries and five sixes. He was out hit-wicket on the last delivery of the inning by Jordan.

Kohli, who leads the tournament batting chart with 296 runs, hit another 50 off 39 balls before being caught at short third man by Adil Rashid off Jordan.

Kohli also reached 4,000 T20 international runs in the 15th over with a boundary off Liam Livingstone.

India, which won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, have been looking for an international title since winning the Champion Trophy in 2013.

Annual US consumer inflation eases to 7.7% in October

Annual consumer inflation in the US came in at 7.7% in October, easing from the 8.2% yearly gain in September, according to official figures released on Thursday.

The consumer price index (CPI), which measures changes in the prices of goods and services from a consumer’s perspective, came in lower than the market estimate of an 8% annual increase.

The figure is the smallest 12-month increase since the period ending January 2022, while it is a sharp decline from the 9.1% yearly gain in June, which was the largest 12-month increase since November 1981.

On a monthly basis, CPI in October rose 0.4% from the previous month, again coming below the market expectation of a 0.6% gain. CPI in September showed a monthly gain of 0.4%.

“The food index increased 0.6% in October following a 0.8% increase in September,” the Labor Department said in a statement.?

“The energy index increased 1.8% in October after falling in the preceding three months. The gasoline index rose 4.0% over the month, also following three consecutive declines,” it added.

Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, gained 0.3% in October from the previous month, again below the market expectation for a 0.5% rise. In September, core CPI also posted a monthly increase of 0.6%.

Annually, core CPI rose 6.3% in October, coming below the market estimate of a 6.5% gain, while it rose 6.6% in September year-on-year.

“The energy index increased 17.6% for the 12 months ending October, and the food index increased 10.9% over the last year; all of these increases were smaller than for the period ending September,” the statement said.

President Joe Biden said the latest consumer price figure shows that his administration is making progress on bringing inflation down, without giving up all of the progress made on economic growth and job creation.

“It will take time to get inflation back to normal levels – and we could see setbacks along the way – but we will keep at it and help families with the cost of living,” he said in a statement.

He noted that Americans are paying around $1.20 less per gallon (3.78 liters) of gasoline at the pump, compared to this summer, and added that his administration plans to bring down prescription drug prices and energy costs in less than eight weeks.

Biden stressed that additional measures that will take effect soon will help the progress of getting inflation under control.

UN allocates $9.5M to contain cholera in Lebanon

The United Nations on Thursday allocated $9.5 million to Lebanon to help in the fight against a cholera outbreak in the country.

“The $9.5 million directly targets more than 1,500,000 people across Lebanon – Lebanese, Syrian refugees, Palestine refugees and migrants – at heightened risk of exposure to cholera,” UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, said in a statement.

Riza voiced hope that the implementation of these emergency and coordinated interventions will limit the spread of the disease in Lebanon.

The UN coordinator called on the Lebanese government to intensify its efforts to ensure the provision of basic services to the population.

Earlier on Thursday, Lebanon’s Health Ministry received 600,000 doses of cholera vaccine, provided by the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

Cholera is caused by ingesting bacteria found in contaminated water or food.

The first case of cholera was reported in Lebanon on Oct. 6, marking the first appearance of the disease in the country since 1993.

Communal clashes claim at least 28 lives in Nigeria

At least 28 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in clashes between two rival clans in Nigeria’s Benue state, an official said on Thursday.

Violence between the Ezza and Effunn clans was triggered by the alleged desecration of a shrine in the neighboring Ebonyi state.

Since Monday, dozens of residential and commercial properties have been damaged in Benue’s Ado area, according to Paul Hembah, a retired army officer and security adviser to the state’s governor.

“Houses and businesses were set ablaze. At least 28 people have died in the violence,” he told Anadolu Agency.

He said police and military personnel have been deployed to prevent further violence.

Investigations are underway and those responsible will be punished, Hembah added.

Nigeria has a long history of interclan rivalries and clashes, with bouts of violence frequently reported due to disputes over matters such as land ownership, fishing or farming rights, and leadership.
