RB Leipzig hire Marco Rose as new head coach

RB Leipzig on Thursday announced they have appointed Marco Rose as their new manager on a two-year contract until June 2024.

The 45-year-old replaces Domenico Tedesco, who departed the club on Wednesday.

Rose earlier managed Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga club said Alexander Zickler, Frank Geideck and Marco Kurth will be Rose’s assistants.

The rest of his coaching team has goalkeeper coach Frederik Gobling, and fitness coaches Ruwen Faller, Kai Kraft and Daniel Behlau.

The German side parted ways with Italy’s Tedesco following a 4-1 home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League.

The 36-year-old led them to win the German Cup, their first major trophy.

RB Leipzig are ranked 5th with 11 points in the Bundesliga standings.

Low income residents queue up in morning to receive basic food bag in Italy

It is 8 a.m. and hundreds of people are lining up and waiting to be served at Pane Quotidiano.

The charity’s headquarters is embedded in a corner on the campus of the University Bocconi of Milan, one of the most expensive and prestigious academic institutions in Europe.

Once the gate opens, dozens of volunteers distribute basic food to beneficiaries, including Italians and families of immigrants, pensioners, and the homeless. They are all here because the cost of living is unsustainable.

“Pane Quotidiano was founded 124 years ago in 1898 by a group of well-deserving Milanese people who thought that bread as a basic element should not be missing from the tables of Italians,” said Luigi Rossi, vice president of the charity.

“From then on, things evolved and in addition to the bread, we distribute yogurt, milk, fruit, cheese, sauce, and ham — meeting the dietary needs of lunch and dinner. We serve about 3,500 to 4,000 people daily in both centers we run: this one and the one located in the Eastern part of the city. The two together serve more than 1 million food rations per year.”

Queuing for free food every day

Maria Benina Caballero from the Philippines arrived in Italy 21 years ago to work as a cleaner.

She gets a pension of a little more than €500 ($498), which is not enough to cover her expenses. “I come here almost every day. In Milan, everything is much more expensive than before and this ration I receive from them is helping me a lot,” she said, concerned about the rising cost of bills.

“This means that I’ll only use candles instead of electricity from now on. But how am I going to cook?” she said.

Retired bartender Lamberto Zannoni, 82, is also worried. He has stood in line outside Pane Quotidiano every day since 2016.

“If I don’t come here every day to get some food, I can’t make it to the end of the month. I live in a flat and I have to pay high living expenses. I heard that the price of bills has increased. I don’t know what I’m going to do next winter: I’m a person suffering from the cold,” he said.

Almost 10% of Italians live in absolute poverty

According to Istat, Italy’s office for national statistics, 1.9 million Italian households, and 5.6 million individuals were in absolute poverty last year, beating the previous record in 2020, the year of the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Absolute poverty among foreign nationals is higher — 29.3% more than among Italians at 7.2%.

“The problems are getting worse, and new poverty is occurring, adds President Rossi.

“Pensions do not get people to the end of the month. Beneficiaries [of the charity] have changed in the last twenty years. Once there were many non-EU citizens, but now the number of Italians has increased and today they are 35% of the total of our beneficiaries,” he concludes.

Economic hardship is spreading and the inflation rate of more than 6% could generate 1 million more people in absolute poverty, Istat predicted in its latest report in June.

“When I started working as a volunteer for Pane Quotidiano more than two years ago, poverty was not so visible,” said Anna Geminiani. “After Covid-19, the perception changed and the beneficiaries increased among those who had lost their jobs, caregivers who could no longer carry out their work among families. In recent months, the number of people seeking food rations has increased because of the war. In one single morning, we serve 1,800 people and expect that the numbers could be higher because of the current situation. The beneficiaries include families, pensioners, homeless people, people who do not have an oven to bake at home or gas to cook a meal.”

A difficult winter

The coming winter is expected to be even more difficult.

Coldiretti, the largest organization of farmers at the national and European level with one-and-a-half million members, said an increase in the number of basic food products was recorded in August and estimates that families in the Lombardy region will spend €1.8 billion ($1.79 billion) more in 2022 on food alone compared to the previous year.

This is due to the explosive mix of rising energy and production costs fueled by the war in Ukraine, combined with record heat and drought that led to a reduction in crop production.

“The key for people to get out of this situation is to eat little and to know how to manage their own money,” said 86-year-old pensioner Augusto Prela, mixing sarcasm with optimism.

Obamas return to White House for official portraits unveiling

Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama returned to the executive mansion on Wednesday for the unveiling of their official White House portraits.

The portraits depict the US’s 45th president posing against a white background in a black suit, white shirt and gray tie, staring into the eyes of the painter with hands planted firmly in his pockets. The painting by artist Robert McCurdy is near photo-realistic, depicting Obama standing augustly.

McCurdy’s other depictions of famous public figures have included Toni Morrison, the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali.

“What I love about Roberts work is that he paints people exactly the way they are, for better or worse,” said Obama. “He captures every wrinkle on your face, every crease in your shirt. You’ll note that he refused to hide any of my gray hairs, refused my request to make my ears smaller.”

“His work is so precise that at first glance it looks like a photograph and Robert also paints his subjects looking straight ahead. So it feels like you’re face to face forming a connection. And that appealed to me,” he added.

Michelle Obama’s portrait was drawn by Sharon Sprung. It depicts the former first lady in an elegant powder blue dress as she sits relaxed on a blue couch. Like her husband’s portrait, Obama’s depicts her staring as if in to the viewer’s eyes.

“It is still a bit odd for me to stand in this historic space. See this big beautiful painting staring back at me,” she said. “Even if it’s all still a bit awkward for me, I do recognize why moments like these are important. Why all of this is absolutely necessary. Traditions like this matter, not just for those of us who hold these positions, but for everyone participating in and watching our democracy.”

Tradition holds that the current president hosts their predecessor for their official White House portrait unveiling, but former President Donald Trump, a relentless critic of Obama, did not do so. That led to President Joe Biden hosting his former boss for Wednesday’s ceremony.

UN says there are ‘credible’ allegations of forcible transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia

There are “credible allegations of forced transfers of unaccompanied,” Ukrainian children to Russia and Russia-held territories in Ukraine, the UN said Wednesday.

Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ilze Brands expressed concern in her briefing to the Security Council about Russia’s move to grant citizenship to Ukrainian children without parental care which would lead to adoption by Russian families.

The Russian Federation is prohibited from changing the personal status of the children, including nationality, under the Fourth Geneva Convention, she said.

”We are particularly concerned that the announced plans of the Russian authorities to allow the movement of children from Ukraine to families in the Russian Federation do not appear to include steps for family reunification or in other ways ensure respect for the principle of the best interests of the child,” she said.

Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of kidnapping the country’s children since the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine on Feb. 24, a claim Moscow strongly denies.

Brands demanded Russia grant unimpeded access to the UN and other independent international monitors to all places of detention to investigate allegations of torture or ill-treatment.

The United States accused Russia of war crimes with forcible transfers and deportations from Ukraine to Russian territories.

”I need not remind this Council that the forcible transfer or deportation of protected persons from occupied territories, to the territory of the occupier, is a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians, and constitutes a war crime,” said US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

”Estimates from a variety of sources, including the Russian government, indicate that Russian authorities have interrogated, detained, forcibly deported between 900,000 and 1.6 million Ukrainian citizens from their homes to Russia – often to isolated regions in the Far East,” she said.

Thomas-Greenfield said the US has information that in July alone, more than 1,800 children were transferred from Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine to Russia.

A total of 5,718 people have been killed, including 372 children, and 8,199 injured, bringing the number of casualties to 13,917 since the beginning of the war, according to the UN.

”These are only verified figures and the actual numbers are likely significantly higher,” said UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo.

More than 6.9 million people are internally displaced and the number of Ukrainian refugees recorded across Europe has surpassed 7 million, she said.

Second suspect in Canadian stabbing rampage dies after going into ‘medical distress’: Police

The second suspect in a stabbing rampage in Canada died after he was apprehended by police and went into “medical distress,” police said Wednesday.

Myles Sanderson, the subject of a four-day manhunt, was captured by police in a small town about 124 kilometers (77 miles) from the scene where 10 residents died and 18 were wounded in a stabbing spree Sunday.

Nine stabbings occurred on the James Smith Cree Nation reserve and one in the nearby village of Weldon.

At a news conference late Wednesday, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said Sanderson was driving a stolen Chevrolet Avalanche truck when he was spotted by an officer in an unmarked car.

Police converged on the area and the truck was forced off the road and into a ditch. The suspect was taken from the vehicle and handcuffed, she said. Shortly afterward, he went into “medical distress,” said Blackmore.

Sanderson was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died.

The incident will be the subject of an independent investigation as happens when police are involved and someone dies, she said.

The other suspect in the murders, Myles’ brother, Damien Sanderson, was found dead Monday with wounds that did not appear to be self-inflicted, said police.

The stabbing spree is one of the worst mass murders in Canadian history.

US suspends F-35 deliveries over China-sourced materials: Report

The US Defense Department has temporarily halted deliveries of the F-35 fifth-generation fighter jet after it was discovered that a component is manufactured using materials from China, according to a report published Wednesday.

The pause was put in place by the F-35 Joint Procurement Office, according to the Flight Global website. The office oversees acquisitions for the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.

The decision was made after it came to light that a pump in the F-35’s turbomachine includes a powerful magnet with metal sourced from China, according to the report. The turbomachine is used to provide power to the jet while it is on the ground for maintenance and while it starts its main engine. It also provides compressed air to assist with temperature management.

While Lockheed Martin is the main contractor for the F-35, the turbomachine is manufactured by Honeywell.

The magnet that includes the China-sourced metal is produced and supplied by an unidentified subcontractor. The magnet is used in a lubrication pump that is part of the turbomachine.

There are nearly 1,400 companies based in 45 states and Puerto Rico that supply parts for the F-35, according to Lockheed Martin’s website.

Honeywell said in an April 2021 statement that it supplies 100 parts for each F-35 built, including avionics, inertial navigation systems, engine fuel controls, cockpit and avionics cooling, wheels and brakes and a thermal management system.

The company told Flight Global that it has stopped working with the supplier who sourced metals from China and expects to begin deliveries from another US firm beginning in October.

Lockheed Martin separately said it conducted a review alongside Honeywell and the Joint Procurement Office that determined the magnet does not pose flight safety issues nor does it provide “any visibility or access to sensitive programme information,” according to Flight Global.
