Turkiye requires those seeking citizenship via investment to sell forex to central bank

According to the new regulation, which was published in the Official Gazette, the investment amount required for obtaining citizenship will be determined in a foreign currency, and this will be sold to the central bank through a bank prior to the investment transaction.

The Turkish lira amount obtained as a result of the sale will be kept in Turkish lira deposits or government debt instruments for at least three years, it said.

Also, the minimum amount of investment required to acquire citizenship was defined as the dollar equivalent of another foreign currency.

The investment amount will be determined in a foreign currency in the application for obtaining the right to Turkish citizenship in return for a fixed-term investment, real estate purchase and keeping the securities in banks for a certain period of time.

Citizenship requirements

With a minimum fixed capital investment of at least $500,000 or equivalent in a foreign currency, the investor has the right to apply for Turkish citizenship in an exceptional way.

Those who purchase real estate worth at least $250,000 or the equivalent in a foreign currency will also be able to benefit from this exception, provided that an annotation is put in the land registry that it will not be sold for three years.

Citizenship can also be given to foreigners who have been promised the sale of the real estate, with a contract drawn up at the notary, provided that a condominium or floor servitude has been established, a minimum deposit of $250,000 or its equivalent is made in a foreign currency, and a commitment not to be transferred or abandoned for three years in the land registry is annotated.

Sidney Poitier, first Black best actor Oscar winner, dies at 94

Poitier’s death was confirmed by officials in the Bahamas where he lived prior to his death. Additional details, including a cause of death, were not immediately available.

Bahamanian Prime Minister Philip Davis hailed Poitier as a “great Bahamian: a cultural icon, an actor and film director, an entrepreneur, civil and human rights activist.”

“We admire the man, not just because of his colossal achievements, but also because of who he was: his strength of character; his willingness to stand up and be counted; and the way he plotted and navigated his life’s journey,” Davis said in remarks broadcast on social media.

In addition to breaking multiple barriers for Black actors seeking to hit the big screen, Poitier was the first Black man and first Bahamanian to win an Oscar for best lead actor in 1964 for his role in “Lilies of the Field.” In that film he portrayed a handyman who helped East German nuns build a chapel.

Poitier’s on-screen credits include nearly five dozen films that hit screens from the 1940s to the 2000s. They include “The Defiant Ones,” “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” and “A Patch of Blue.” He also had a handful of director credits

Turkish official expresses sorrow over loss of lives in Kazakhstan

A senior Turkish official expressed sorrow Thursday over the ongoing unrest and loss of lives in Kazakhstan stemming from protests against rising fuel prices.

“Peace, stability and tranquility in Kazakhstan is Turkiye’s top priority. Turkiye will always continue to stand by Kazakhstan,” presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Twitter.

Turkiye’s AK Party spokesman Omer Celik also voiced solidarity with Kazakhstan.

“Turkiye always stands by friend and brother Kazakhstan. It is our greatest wish that Kazakhstan will get through these days and become a peaceful and strong country in all respects. The people of Kazakhstan have the foresight to get through these days with common sense,” Celik said on Twitter.

Expressing sorrow over the loss of lives in Kazakhstan, Celik said Turkiye’s greatest wish is that all people in Kazakhstan are safe and for an end to the ongoing unrest in the country.

The protests began in western Kazakhstan on Jan. 2 over an increase in the prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and later spread to other areas of the country before going nationwide.

To ensure public safety, a state of emergency was declared in the commercial capital Almaty and the oil-rich Mangystau region.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also approved the resignation of the government.

He requested help from the Russian-led military alliance the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which agreed to send an unspecified number of peacekeepers.

22 injured as Israeli forces attack Palestinian rallies

At least 22 Palestinians protesting against illegal Israeli settlements were injured by Israeli forces on Friday in different areas across the occupied West Bank.

In a statement, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said its medical teams treated 19 Palestinians in the Beita village, southern Nablus city in the north of the West Bank.

It added that four Palestinians were injured by rubber-coated bullets and 15 others suffered tear gas inhalation.

Beita village is a flashpoint for clashes with Israeli forces, with virtually daily protests over Israel’s confiscation of Palestinian property for the development of an Israeli settlement on Mount Sbeih near Beita.

Meanwhile, Eid Abu Monshar from the Red Crescent Society told Anadolu Agency that three Palestinians were injured by the Israeli forces in Hebron city, southern West Bank, during a rally protesting the Israeli settlement policy.

On weekly basis, Palestinians hold demonstrations against illegal Jewish settlements in different parts of the West Bank, especially in Beita, Beit Dajan, and Kafr Qaddoum villages.

Israeli and Palestinian estimates indicate there are about 650,000 settlers living in 164 settlements and 116 outposts in the West Bank, including in occupied Jerusalem.

Under international law, all Jewish settlements in occupied territories are considered illegal.

Iran ‘ready to talk’ to countries concerned on Ukraine plane downing

A solemn ceremony was held at Tehran's largest cemetery on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the downing of a Ukrainian airliner, which killed 176 people.

Speaking at the ceremony, which was attended by senior civilian and military officials, as well as families of the victims, Amir Hossein Ghazizadeh, who heads Iran's Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans, called it "one of the saddest days" in the country's history.

He expressed hope that investigations into the incident would be finished soon and perpetrators would be identified, echoing calls made by families of the victims.

The incident, which sent shockwaves across the world, came four days after Iran's top military commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike on Jan. 3, 2020 in Baghdad.

Two missiles struck a Ukrainian commercial flight after it had taken off from Tehran Airport, killing all people on board.

Iran called it a "human error," but countries such as Canada, the UK, Ukraine, and Sweden, whose citizens were killed in the incident, have repeatedly rejected Iran's explanation.

In a statement, Iran's Foreign Ministry said it was ready to hold talks with the countries concerned, provided the talks respect "sovereignty (of countries), domestic laws and international obligations".

It said a criminal investigation has been held into the case and the Iranian Cabinet on Jan. 21, 2021 agreed to pay $150,000 in reparations to each of the victims.

The statement came after Canada, Britain, Sweden, and Ukraine earlier this week said they had given up efforts to talk to Tehran about reparations and would resolve the matter in accordance with international law.

Meanwhile, many Iranians took to social media to pay tribute to the victims of the plane crash.

Javad Zarif, who served as Iran's foreign minister when the incident happened in early 2020, offered his "sincere condolences and apologies" to the families of victims.

Ecuador: Tallest Galapagos volcano erupts

The Wolf volcano, the tallest mountain in the Galapagos islands, started erupting on Thursday night spewing lava and clouds of ash over the Pacific Ocean, reported Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute.

The eruption began at 23:20 local time on Thursday and at 00:20 on Friday, “a cloud of gas and ash reaching heights between 3,793 meters (13,035 ft) above sea level to the northeast and 1,943 meters (6,375 ft) above sea level to the west” was observed, the Institute said. Park rangers recorded a video of a red beam of light coming out of the mountain early Friday morning.

Prior to this activity, around 21:00 there was an earthquake and then “a tremor signal was observed, probably associated with the beginning of the eruption,” the Institute reported.

The Wolf volcano, located on Isabela Island, last erupted in May 2015. It is the highest peak of the islands reaching 1,707 meters (5,600 ft) in altitude and it is one of the five active volcanoes on Isabela Island, along with Sierra Negra, Cerro Azul, Alcedo and Darwin.

The institute says that “lava flows are descending on the south and southeast flanks of the volcano” and that the interaction of this material with sea water “can cause explosions”.

The Wolf volcano is not located near an inhabited area and does not represent a risk for the human population of Isabela. However, it is a threat for certain unique species that inhabit the area such as the pink iguanas that live at an altitude of 1,500 meters (4,921 ft).

Ecuador’s minister for environment, water and ecological transition, Gustavo Manrique, said that a team from the Galapagos National Park “is evaluating the situation to monitor this natural process of an archipelago in formation”.

“The wonderful Wolf volcano, the highest volcano in Galapagos and home of the pink iguana, surprised us with a new eruption,” he said on Twitter.
