WHY ROSEN LAW: We encourage investors to select qualified counsel with a track record of success in leadership roles. Be wise in selecting counsel. The Rosen Law Firm represents investors throughout the globe, concentrating its practice in securities class actions and shareholder derivative litigation. Rosen Law Firm has achieved the largest ever securities class action settlement against a Chinese Company. Rosen Law Firm was Ranked No. 1 by ISS Securities Class Action Services for number of securities class action settlements in 2017. The firm has been ranked in the top 4 each year since 2013 and has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for investors. In 2019 alone the firm secured over $438 million for investors. In 2020, founding partner Laurence Rosen was named by law360 as a Titan of Plaintiffs’ Bar. Many of the firm’s attorneys have been recognized by Lawdragon and Super Lawyers.

DETAILS OF THE CASE: According to the lawsuit, defendants throughout the Class Period made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (1) Berkeley Lights’ flagship instrument, the Beacon, suffered from numerous design and manufacturing defects including breakdowns, high error rates, data integrity issues and other problems, limiting the ability of biotechnology companies and research institutions to consistently use the machines at scale; (2) Berkeley Lights had received numerous customer complaints regarding the durability and effectiveness of Berkeley Lights’ automation systems, including complaints related to the design and manufacturing; (3) the actual market for Berkeley Lights’ products and services was a fraction of the $23 billion represented to investors because of, among other things, the relatively high cost of Berkeley Lights’ instruments and consumables and inability to provide the sustained performance necessary to justify these high costs; and (4) as a result, defendants’ statements to investors during the Class Period regarding Berkeley Lights’ business, operations, and financial results were materially false and misleading. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages.

No Class Has Been Certified. Until a class is certified, you are not represented by counsel unless you retain one. You may select counsel of your choice. Turkish Cypriots head to ballot boxes for early parliamentary polls

Voting for parliament in early general elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) started early Sunday.

Nearly 203,800 voters are eligible to cast ballots at 763 polling stations.

There are eight parties running in the election, with 403 candidates contending for spots in the 50-seat parliament.

Among the 403 candidates are 131 women – nearly one-third – with the youngest born in 1996.

The parties running in the election include the ruling National Unity Party (UBP), Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Democrat Party (DP), People’s Party (HP), Communal Liberation Party-New Forces (TKP-YG), Rebirth Party (YDP) and Independence Path Party (BY).

The election threshold for parties in the TRNCto be represented in parliament is 5% of total votes.

With COVID-19 cases surging recently due to the omicron variant, health measures kept political rallies small, with no more than 150 people allowed. Also, those diagnosed with COVID-19 are not eligible to vote.

The Turkish Cypriot state last November set the date for early elections, one year ahead of schedule.

16 killed, 8 injured at nightclub fire in Cameroon’s capital

At least 16 people were killed and eight others were seriously injured when a fire broke out early Sunday morning at a nightclub in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, authorities said.

“On Sunday, January 23, 2022, at about 2:30 am, an accidental fire broke out in the cultural complex Liv’s Night Club of Yaouba, located in the district Bastos in Yaounde,” the Communications Ministry said in a statement.

It said a tragedy occurred due to the fire caused by fireworks commonly used in these areas. The fire first destroyed the building’s ceiling, and it was followed by two high-amplitude explosions that caused panic and stampede within the nightclub.

Earlier, the state-run Cameroun Tribune reported that 14 people died on the spot and two others died later in the city’s central hospital from their injuries, citing Joseph Fouda, the health facility’s director.

“Unfortunately, the flames quickly spread to the club’s basement, especially with walls covered in foam and plastic,” the report said, citing a security guard.

“I got out of the nightclub a little early. I was with a group of friends. I lost two of them. They were burnt to death,” Stephane Amougou, a local who lives near the club, told Anadolu Agency.

One of his friends was Henri Ateba, an aviation official whose name appears alongside the other Cameroonian figures on the list of the dead people.

“All arrangements are being made for the identification of the deceased and their inhumation in accordance with the customs in force,” the government stated.

Several Cameroonian authorities came to the scene of the tragedy, promising free medical care to the injured.

UN condemns arrest of female activist in Sudan

The UN mission in Sudan on Sunday decried the arrest of a Sudanese female activist, saying the detention was a reduction of women political participation in the country.

“Outraged by arrest of women’s rights advocate Amira Osman overnight,” the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) said on Twitter.

The mission said Osman’s arrest along with the pattern of violence against female activists “severely risks reducing their political participation in Sudan.”

The statement called for the activist’s immediate release and urged the Sudanese authorities to “respect right to freedom of assembly.”

On Saturday evening, the “No to Oppression of Women” initiative said Osman, the initiative’s chair, was detained by Sudanese security forces and taken to an unknown location.

Sudan has been in turmoil since Oct. 25, 2021 when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency.

Prior to the military takeover, Sudan was governed by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials tasked with overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023.

Hamdok was reinstated on Nov. 21 following an agreement, but protesters denounced the deal, insisting on the removal of any military influence over the transitional governing coalition. He resigned on Jan. 2, citing a political deadlock.
