Cambodia hits COVID-19 vaccination target of 10M people

Cambodia on Tuesday said it has achieved its target of vaccinating 10 million people against COVID-19.

The vaccination drive in the Southeast Asian country has “reached 100.05% of the targeted 10 million people above 18 years of age,” said a statement by the prime minister’s office.

It added that 97.93% of some 1.83 million people under the age of 18 have been covered, along with 101.46% of around 1.89 million under-12s, and 8.81% of about 304,300 kids under the age of 5.

The kingdom, home to nearly 16 million people, launched a mass immunization campaign in February with vaccines and supplies from China.

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government allocated $170 million to purchase vaccines, including the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab, which has enabled Cambodia to achieve one of the highest vaccination rates in Southeast Asia.

In August, it started administering third booster shots to eligible people and vaccinating children between the ages of 12 and 17.

Daily infections in Cambodia dropped to 89 on Tuesday, while new fatalities were at six.

The nationwide count now stands at 118,702, including 2,800 deaths, according to latest data.

Bulgaria grapples with ‘critical’ phase of pandemic amid 4th wave

The COVID-19 pandemic in Bulgaria has come to a “critical” phase as the number of active cases soared above 100,000, the country’s health minister warned on Tuesday.

In a meeting with representatives of the health and pharmaceutical sectors, Stoycho Katsarov underlined the importance of unity in the fight against COVID-19 despite differences of opinion.

“We’re here to express our common concern, we’re all facing a huge threat, and joint action is needed,” Katsarov said.

As a fourth wave of the pandemic escalates in Bulgaria, the next two weeks are expected to be critical, he continued.

“This is not merely a crisis of health, it is a national disaster,” he added. “Without unity, our health system cannot cope with it alone.”

Katsarov advised people to follow “a few simple rules,” including wearing masks, minimizing social contacts, not leaving home unless necessary, and maintaining social distance.

“And most importantly, get vaccinated,” he said, noting that all other measures would be temporary and would only prolong lockdowns. “In order for the healthcare system to survive, you have to get vaccinated,” Katsarov added.

As many as 6,007 new cases were recorded in the country over the last 24 hours, and 310 people succumbed to the virus. A total of 8,030 patients are currently under treatment at hospitals, with 669 of them in intensive care.

The Health Ministry reported that 94% of those who lost their lives were not vaccinated.

The number of active cases in the country rose above 100,000, and the total number of fatalities reached 24,309.

Under government-mandated measures, schools are being held online, and vaccination certificates are required to attend entertainment, sports, and culture events as well as enter restaurants.

With nearly 80% of its population unvaccinated – the lowest rate in the European Union – Bulgaria’s government is stepping up its vaccination campaign while continuing to struggle with anti-vaccine protests.

Russia hits another grim record of daily coronavirus deaths

Russia recorded on Tuesday another daily coronavirus death toll record as 1,178 people died over the past day, taking the overall count to 240,871.

Over the same period, the daily infections rose by 39,008 to a total of 8.59 million, while active cases are closing to 1 million — currently standing at 939,698 — Russia’s coronavirus emergency task force said in a daily report.

Recoveries went up by 30,905 since Monday to reach 7.41 million, the report said.

Three cases of the “mu” strain and one “lambda” case were identified in Russia, the authorities said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the coronavirus situation in Russia “very difficult,” noting that the number of active cases is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

The country’s western Nizhegorodskaya Oblast region expanded the non-working period in Russia till Nov. 14 to cope with the surge in cases.

Starting Oct. 28, Russia will have a national 10-day non-working period aiming to stem the spread of the virus.

Since December 2019, the pandemic has claimed more than 5 million lives in 192 countries and regions, with over 247 million cases reported worldwide, according to the US’ Johns Hopkins University.

Barcelona’s Aguero to be unavailable for 3 months after heart tests

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero will be unavailable to play for at least three months after undergoing heart tests, the club announced Monday.

According to its official website, the Argentine star was “subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process” that will prevent him from playing for a while and “the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process.”

The 33-year-old felt unwell in the first half of a La Liga match between Barcelona and Alaves on Saturday and was replaced before half time by Philippe Coutinho.

Aguero was then taken to a hospital for cardiological evaluation.

The former Manchester City player has produced one goal in five matches for Barcelona so far.
