تقرير جديد يحذر من ‘هجرة جماعية ثالثة’ من لبنان خاصة من مزدوجي الجنسية مع تسارع وتيرة الأزمة

لندن, 12 سبتمبر / أيلول 2021 /PRNewswire/ —  خلص تقرير نشره مرصد الأزمات في الجامعة اللبنانية الأمريكية في بيروت إلى أن الأمة تدخل حاليًا في موجة نزوح جماعي ثالثة. وبحسب التقرير، فإن أحد المؤشرات الداخلية على دخول لبنان في موجة هجرة جماعية يتمثل في ارتفاع فرص الهجرة بين الشباب اللبناني. واستناداً إلى مسح أُجري العام الماضي، قال 77 في المئة من الشباب اللبناني إنهم يفكرون في الهجرة ويسعون لها، وهذه النسبة هي الأعلى بين جميع الدول العربية.

يعانى لبنان منذ ذلك الحين من أزمات عدة، تشمل هذه الأزمات الحروب والاغتيالات والصراعات السياسية بسبب عقود من الفساد وسوء الحكم. وتعرضت الليرة اللبنانية للانخفاض بنحو 80 بالمئة، مما أدى إلى فقد المودعون لمدخراتهم. وغادر العديد من المهنيين والمختصين البلاد، ومنهم مثلًا الأطباء والأكاديميين ورجال الأعمال والمصممين، ومن بقي منهم يخططون حاليًا للرحيل. حيث يعتمد هؤلاء في كثير من الحالات، أخرى حصلوا عليها من آبائهم أو أجدادهم الذين غادروا لبنان في موجات الهجرة الماضية.

أما أولئك الذين ليس لديهم بالفعل نسخة احتياطية من جنسية أسلاف سابقة فقد لجأوا إلى طرق غير تقليدية للحصول على جنسية أخرى. صرحت ميشا إيميت، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة CS Global Partners، وهي شركة استشارية لحلول المواطنة مقرها لندن، “بأن عددًا متزايدًا من المواطنين اللبنانيين يطرحون تساؤلات عن برامج الجنسية عن طريق الاستثمار (CBI). برامج الجنسية عن طريق الاستثمار (CBI) هي طريقة هجرة يساهم من خلالها المستثمر بمبلغ معين من المال في اقتصاد الدولة مقابل الحصول على الجنسية، مما يؤدي في النهاية إلى الحصول على جواز سفر هذا البلد.

وأضافت إيميت، قائلة: “غالبًا ما تكون برامج الجنسية عن طريق الاستثمار (CBI) هي أفضل وأسرع ملجأ لأولئك الذين يواجهون حالة من الشكوك في وطنهم ويريدون طريقة لتأمين ثروتهم ومستقبل عائلاتهم”. “لسوء الحظ، يمكن أن يكون العالم الذي نعيش فيه صعبًا للغاية، أحيانًا ما نتعرض لأوقات عصيبة في أي لحظة. تتيح برامج الجنسية في مقابل الاستثمار للأفراد تأمين خطة احتياطية تحميهم في هذه اللحظات تحديدًا”.

توجد بعض أكثر برامج الجنسية عن طريق الاستثمار رواجًا في منطقة البحر الكاريبي، حيث نشأت هذه الفكرة أصلًا. حيث يمكن الحصول على الجنسية من برنامج الجنسية في مقابل الاستثمار في سانت كيتس ونيفيس دون الحاجة إلى الإقامة أو السفر. ويمكن عمومًا إتمام العملية بأكملها عبر الإنترنت في غضون بضعة أشهر. وفقًا للخبراء في مجلة PWM الصادرة عن Financial Times، فإن هذا البرنامج يصنف حاليًا باعتباره الأفضل على مستوى العالم.

Uganda faces ‘epidemic’ of teenage pregnancies during pandemic

Government officials and experts have shown concern at the rising cases of teenage pregnancies in the landlocked East African country of Uganda during the COVID-related restrictions.

Education officer Nelson Ayo claimed that over 90,000 girls under 18 have got pregnant during this period when they were not going to school.

Education Minister Janet Museveni urged parents to guard their daughters. “I will not get tired of reminding you (parents) to always keep an eye on your children so that they do not get pregnant during this lockdown,” she said.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, primary teacher Rachael Bakalikwir, who resides in Natayigirwa village in Luuka district, 180 kilometers (111 miles) from the capital Kampala, said since the COVID-19 enforced lockdown, it has become a normal sight in the region to see teenage pregnant girls.

“Since lockdown, children stopped going to school. They became redundant and started misbehaving leading to many of the girls becoming pregnant,” she said.

She added that in that village, and neighboring villages it is normal to see 14- or 15-year-old girls pregnant.

Hamuza Lubale, a district children welfare officer, said he has so far recorded 770 pregnancies of children below 18 years in the district. But he said there may be many more in rural areas which have not been recorded.

Livingstone Naitema, a retired headmaster, urged the government to reopen schools so that students will get engaged.

“Few girls have been impregnated by fellow students, but the majority ones have been exploited by mature men in the villages especially those who work in sugar plantations,” he said.

Reports said the phenomenon is not limited to Luuka, alone but has spread across all the 144 districts in the country.

Jonana Kandwanaho, who heads the country’s national planning authority, said these pregnancies will become a burden on the nation in the nearby future. He also said that schools should reopen soon to allow children to return to an organized environment to keep them safe.

A recent survey by Twaweza, an NGO which promotes education countrywide, said at least 80% of Ugandans are worried about teenage pregnancy at epidemic proportions during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Richard Mugahi, an assistant commissioner of reproductive and infant health at the Health Ministry, also described teenage pregnancies as a big challenge. He said girls are better and safer in schools.

Tanzania’s ancient town pins hope on heritage tourism to heal slavery’s wounds

Tanzania is touting slave trade artifacts, including 150-year-old memorabilia of renowned British explorer David Livingstone, to promote heritage tourism in the western Tabora town mired in widespread poverty and economic stagnation.

Heritage tourism is increasingly becoming a growing industry in Africa, attracting a huge number of descendants of the slave trade and tourists who are disenchanted by traditional attractions and are seeking more authentic experiences by visiting historic and cultural sites.

More than 9 million people are believed to have been sold as slaves by Arab traders to the Middle East and other regions through long trips across the Sahara Desert and the Indian Ocean.

Tourism dollars

Perched on the rolling hills with thin grass straws, Tabora, previously known as Kazeh, was founded by Arab traders in the 1850s and became a center of the slave trade and a junction of major caravan routes from Ujiji-Kigoma on the shores of Lake Tanganyika to the Bagamoyo town on the Indian Ocean coast.

The ancient town is known for its long streets dotted with giant mango trees said to have been created by long lines of slaves spitting mango seeds as they passed.

“Cursed” by the brutal slave trade, the town has for decades lagged behind economically but officials are aggressively working to market its slave trade heritage sites to cash in tourism dollars and attract much-needed foreign investments.

Tabora Mayor Ramadhani Kapela said heritage tourism is not a new phenomenon and part of the government’s broader effort to rekindle forgotten history and woo tourists and investors.

“The idea is to make people remember their history and where they came from, no matter how brutal it was,” he told Anadolu Agency.

From the handwritten scribbling in Dr. David Livingstone’s notebook to the chains used to shackle slaves to the old fort used as headquarters of German East Africa, and to a 150-year-old mango tree used as gallows for sick and tired slaves, officials use multiple slave trade relics to rekindle history of the ancient town in the hinterland.

Tourism is one of the cornerstones of Tanzania’s economy, contributing about 17.2% to the country’s gross domestic product and 25% of all foreign exchange revenues. The sector, which provides direct employment for more than 600,000 people, injected roughly $2.4 billion in 2018, government statistics show.

At the Kwihara village, located 8 kilometers (around 5 miles) from Tabora, the marron-colored, Arabic-style “tembe” house, built in 1857 by an Arab trader where Dr. Livingstone lived during his stay in Tabora in 1872, appears strikingly intact with a sordid history belies its beauty.

Mbarak Saleh, a curator, said a collection of Dr. Livingstone’s personal belongings, including letters, maps, pictures, a diary, and a copy of the daily New York Herald, are a great treasure for future tourism.

“This house was a center of the slave trade at that time. I believe people would be interested to visit and learn more about the slave trade,” he said.

According to Saleh, Livingstone stayed in that house in 1871 and it was later occupied by Henry Morton Stanley, who waited for three months hoping that the Arabs would defeat Mirambo — a famed king of the Nyamwezi people — and reopen the trail to lake Tanganyika.

Trail of slave trade

Despite having a wealth of tourist attractions, the tourism industry remains largely untapped in Tabora. Officials are banking on relics of the slave trade and colonialism to woo foreign visitors.

The move to market slave trade relics, touted as silver-bullet to unleash tourism potential in the impoverished town, however, evoked bitter memories among villagers who recall horrors of the slave trade where their ancestors were brutally shackled and forcibly made to work as cheap laborers.

“Slave trade was a very bad thing. It was the worst crime on humanity. No amount of money can heal the wounds it inflicted to our ancestors made,” said Mustafa Kitwana, 91, a resident of the Itetemia village.

To most Tabora residents, the slave trade remains one of the most tragic and disturbing crimes of humanity partly responsible for their miseries.

Hamisi Kaloka, a retired official from the department of archaeology of the Tourism and Natural Resources Ministry, called upon traditional African chiefs whose ancestors colluded with Arabs in the dreadful business to publicly apologize.

“We can no longer blame the Arabs for their cruelty. It would be wise for our local chiefs to say sorry to the victims of the slave trade,” he said.

UEFA chief attacks breakaway European Super League trio

The UEFA head has once again censured Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – remaining clubs of the breakaway European Super League (ESL).

“I wouldn’t mind if they left,” Aleksander Ceferin said in an interview with Germany’s Der Spiegel on Friday.

“These people tried to kill football with their incompetent directors,” he added.

In April, a dozen European giants from England, Italy, and Spain announced to form the ESL. But after a major backlash, nine of the 12 clubs quit the project before it fully took off.

UEFA condemned the failed project, and opened disciplinary proceedings against the three clubs for their roles in the league.

In May, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus dismissed UEFA’s disciplinary action, saying they would not give up on the ESL.

The proceedings were suspended in June, and the three clubs entered the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League groups.

Citing the Real Madrid president’s earlier statements, Ceferein said: “Florentino Perez complains, saying his club can only survive with the Super League, and then offers 180 million euros to sign Kylian Mbappe.”

Mbappe is still with Paris Saint-Germain as the French club rejected a €160 million ($188 million) bid by Real Madrid.

Perez had described the Super League as a way to “save football.”

“If we continue with the Champions League there is less and less interest and then it’s over,” he said.

“When you have no income other than television, you say that the solution is to make more attractive matches that fans from all over the world can see with all the big clubs, and we came to the conclusion that if instead of having a Champions League we have a Super League we would be able to alleviate what we have lost.

“This is not a league for the rich, it’s a league to save football.”

Flamengo sign Brazilian defender David Luiz

Flamengo strengthened its defense on Saturday with Brazilian central defender David Luiz.

The team said Luiz, 34, signed a contract that will keep him at the Brazilian club until December 2022.

Luiz last played for Arsenal in the English Premier League but left the London club in July.

He previously played for Portugal’s Benfica, French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain and England’s Chelsea.

Luiz won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012.

He also helped Chelsea claim the UEFA Europa League twice in 2013 and 2019 as well as the 2017 English Premier League.

Luiz was a Paris Saint-Germain regular when they won back-to-back French Ligue 1 titles in 2015 and 2016.

He has piled up 57 international caps for Brazil.

Luiz played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup where Brazil finished fourth.

Emma Raducanu wins women’s 2021 US Open in her first Grand Slam title

Emma Raducanu, the hope of British tennis, won the 2021 US Open women’s singles title on Saturday, her first Grand Slam championship.

Raducanu, 18, beat her 19-year-old Canadian opponent, Leylah Fernandez, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the all-teen final at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.

Near the end of the exciting match, Raducanu had to have a medical timeout for bleeding to her left knee when she slid on the hardcourt surface.

“First of all, I really want to congratulate Leylah and her team. She played some incredible tennis and has beaten some of the top players in the world. The level was extremely high and I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals,” Raducanu said and thanked her team, fans and everyone who watched the final.

Fernandez praised Raducanu for her performance on the court.

“It is incredible. I have no idea what to say. Today is going to be hard but Emma played amazing. Congratulations! I am very proud of myself and having the New York crowd has been amazing. Thank you so much New York. Thank you everyone,” said Fernandez.

Raducanu become the first British woman to win the US Open since 1968 when Virginia Wade took the top prize.

Raducanu was awarded the 2021 trophy and $2.5 million in prize money.

Fernandez is returning home with the finalist plate and $1.25 million.

Like Raducanu, it was Fernandez’s first major final.

Haaland-led Borussia Dortmund beat Bayer Leverkusen in 7-goal thriller

Borussia Dortmund fought hard on Saturday to beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 in a thrilling German Bundesliga match.

Dortmund’s Norwegian star Erling Haaland scored two goals, including the winner, in Leverkusen’s BayArena.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz scored the early opener to draw first blood. Haaland replied in minute 37 with a header.

The home team again took the lead as Czech forward Patrick Schick put the ball into Dortmund net to make it 2-1.

Borussia Dortmund leveled when Julian Brandt fired from close range in the 49th minute.

Moussa Diaby made it 3-2 for Bayer Leverkusen in the 55th minute, scoring from outside the penalty area.

Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro scored the equalizer in minute 71 with a classy freekick.

In the 77th minute, Haaland successfully converted a firm penalty to make it 4-3 for Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland, 21, who has been a Borussia Dortmund forward since 2020, has scored 45 goals in 47 Bundesliga appearances.

Borussia Dortmund have nine points in four league matches in the Bundesliga that is currently led by Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg won all four matches to bag 12 points.

German champions Bayern Munich are in second with 10 points.

Bayern Munich toppled RB Leipzig 4-1 in an away match on Saturday.

NBA greats Russell, Kukoc, Bosh, Pierce, Wallace enter Hall of Fame 2021

NBA veterans Bill Russell, Toni Kukoc, Chris Bosh, Paul Pierce, Ben Wallace, and Chris Webber were officially inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 2021 on Saturday night.

They joied the official ceremony for the Class of 2021 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Former US President Barack Obama congratulated Russell, 87, for entering the Hall of Fame as a head coach.

“I could not be more honored to celebrate Bill Russell for the way he played, the way he coached, the way he led, the way he lives his life,” Obama said in a video that NBA shared on Twitter.

“Congratulations Mr. Russell and welcome once again to the Hall of Fame,” he added.

NBA’s first Black head coach Russell – a Boston Celtics veteran from 1956-1969 – is an 11-time NBA champion with the Celtics. He spent his whole career at the team based in Boston.

The Basketball HOF honored Russell as a coach this time. He was previously inducted in 1975 as a player.

As a coach, Russell led the Celtics to NBA wins in 1968 and 1969.

The Hall of Fame pays tribute to world basketball greats, including coaches, players, and referees, for their significant contributions to the game.

Chicago Bulls’ former Croatian forward Kukoc, Miami Heat’s former center-forward Bosh, Boston Celtics’ ex-player Pierce, Detroit Pistons’ former center Wallace, and former player of the Sacramento Kings Webber were enshrined in the A-list.

Kukoc won three NBA titles with the Bulls from 1996-1998.

Bosh was a two-time NBA champion with the Heat in 2012 and 2013. He was also picked for the NBA All-Star 11 times.

A 10-time NBA All-Star, Pierce was one of the integral parts of Celtics, winning the 2008 NBA title.

Wallace, who played for Detroit Pistons for most of his career, became the NBA champion in 2004. He was a four-time NBA All-Star.

Webber, the 1994 NBA Rookie of the Year, was a longtime Sacramento Kings power forward (1998-2005). He played in five NBA All-Star games.

Rick Adelman, Jay Wright, Yolanda Griffith, Lauren Jackson, Val Ackerman, Cotton Fitzsimmons, Howard Garfinkel, Clarence “Fats” Jenkins, Bob Dandridge, and Pearl Moore were also included in the Hall of Fame.
