Trump’s Pick for Envoy to Trkiye Stresses Country’s Strategic Role

Washington: Speaking to the US Congress, President Donald Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Trkiye emphasized the country’s vital strategic importance.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tom Barrack, addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at his confirmation hearing, highlighted Trkiye’s position at the intersection of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East and its significant contributions to NATO. He noted Trkiye’s military capabilities, including one of NATO’s largest militaries and naval fleets, and its partnership in combating ISIS.

Barrack, a veteran businessman and longtime Trump associate, mentioned Trkiye’s regional influence, citing its support for Ukraine through drone supplies and involvement in mediating the Black Sea Grain Initiative. He also emphasized the strategic importance of Trkiye’s management of the Istanbul and Canakkale Straits under the Montreux Convention, which restricts the passage of warships during wartime.

On economic relations, Barrack expressed optimism about achieving the $100 billion trade target set by Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Trump, stating that the two countries “can easily reach” this goal. He underscored the importance of enhancing US-Trkiye energy partnerships, particularly in liquefied natural gas, to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Addressing a question about Syria, Barrack described the YPG as part of the PKK, which both the US and Trkiye consider a terror group, although he acknowledged its role in combating ISIS. The PKK, in its 40-year campaign against Trkiye, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths, including civilians. The YPG, also known as the SDF, is its Syrian offshoot.

When asked about Trkiye’s expanding role in Syria, Barrack admitted needing more information but promised close consultation with all stakeholders if confirmed. His remarks maintained a positive outlook on Turkish-US relations, in contrast to recent tensions between the NATO allies over policy issues.
