Ankara: The Turkish foreign minister has emphasized Trkiye’s comprehensive approach to its Africa policy, which extends beyond economic and social sectors to include security cooperation and efforts to promote peace and stability. Speaking at the Third Ministerial Review Conference of the Trkiye-Africa Partnership, Hakan Fidan stated that Trkiye is committed to doing everything it can to resolve conflicts in regions where it has ties.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan revealed that Ankara has initiated a process to ease tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia, with three meetings held with the foreign ministers of the two countries since July. These meetings took place in Ankara and New York, with the aim of developing a framework tailored to the needs of both parties. Fidan underlined the historical and contemporary nature of the issue, emphasizing the necessity for both leaders to make decisions based on current circumstances.
Fidan further elaborated on the need for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial i
ntegrity to be recognized while ensuring Ethiopia’s access to the sea for trade through peaceful means. He highlighted the importance of sea access for Ethiopia’s large population and pointed out that efforts are underway to implement a plan that addresses these principles.
Turning to the situation in Sudan, Fidan expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis, noting that millions of civilians are suffering due to lack of access to essential resources. He called for international attention and humanitarian aid, stressing the importance of Trkiye’s assistance to Sudan and the need to halt the ongoing conflict. Fidan mentioned the Jeddah process, led by Saudi Arabia and the US, and noted that despite involvement from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, no significant developments have been made to stop the fighting.
