Spokesperson says no pressing timetables for GSI, but time is not unlimited

There are no pressing timetables to reach an agreement for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, however time is not unlimited, Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said, following a meeting of the National Council on Friday.

He also recalled that next week the President of the Republic is visiting Athens and will hold a meeting with the Greek Premier on the matter.

Replying to a question whether the UAE showed interest in the project, he recalled that an MoU was signed last December between the Ministry of Energy, the National Energy Company of Abu Dhabi and Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) and a working group has been established which meets regularly.

He said that the President discussed the issue in his recent visit to Abu Dhabi and the discussions with the Greek side are now continuing intensively.

Letymbiotis recalled statements by the President of the Republic that progress has been achieved through this discussion and added that the meeting held in the presence of a
ll parties last Tuesday, in Cyprus, was useful and constructive in order to be able to raise all the issues and all the requests.

The Spokesperson said that this is a project of great strategic importance and therefore due diligence is needed in order to have clarity in all issues raised and safeguard that the project will proceed smoothly and will be for the benefit of the Cypriot consumers.

Replying to a question he said that we aim to reach a conclusion as soon as possible in what is being discussed because this will have a positive effect on the continuation and further progress of the project.

He said that we need to proceed in a way that there is no ambiguity for the benefit of both the project and our country.
