The UNSG's Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, will be received on Monday at 1100 local time by Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides. During their meeting, Christodoulides and Stewart are expected to review the situation as regards efforts for the resumption of Cyprus negotiations, in light of the political scene to be formed in Turkey after the elections in the country, and the deliberations taking place on Nicosia's part, in the framework of Christodoulides' proposal for a more active involvement of the EU in the efforts for a Cyprus settlement, always under the UN auspices. Stewart visited Brussels recently and had meetings with EU officials, to which he is expected to refer during his meeting with President Christodoulides. The UN official is also set to meet on Tuesday afternoon with Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
