German Climate Watch sees prolonged heatwave in Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus

The weather forecast for the rest of August until the first week of September for the Eastern Mediterranean region, including Cyprus, according to the German Weather Service’s (DWD) Climate Watch, is that temperatures are expected to be significantly higher than normal, often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Very high temperatures will be recorded between 11:00 and 17:00.

The public is advised to monitor the bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology on a daily basis (three bulletins are issued every 24 hours with updated forecasts, where and when needed, based on new forecast and actual data), as well as the relevant warnings.

According to a renewed advisory directive of the Climate Watch Advisory Group of the World Meteorological Organization WMO in Cyprus, Greece, Crete, Rhodes, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Spain, France, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia, temperatures are expected to be significantly above normal until the first week of September, with h
eatwave episodes with temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

The monthly climate model forecasts for the region from the German Meteorological Service (DWD) show that temperature deviations from climatic norms are expected to reach between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius, with the strongest warming in the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean and southern European countries.

For the following days (from 17 August to 6 September) with a probability of 60% to 90%, the certainty of the intensity and extent of the wave of increased thermal stress is increased.

The weather conditions of the region (flow in the lower atmosphere, counter-cyclonic movements in the upper atmosphere) create conditions of increased heat stress in all sub-reported areas and, in combination with the prolonged dry season, there is an extremely increased risk of forest fires.
