The Dow was down 221 points, or 0.7%, to 31,268 points at 9.41 a.m. EDT (1341GMT). The S&P 500 fell 12 points, or 0.31%, to 3,911.
The Nasdaq, on the other hand, rose 27 points, or 0.24%, to 11,444.
Movie theater chain AMC Entertainment and cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase Global saw their stock prices climb more than 3% apiece.
Despite the gains in tech stocks, the VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was still up 4.5% to 32.36.
While the dollar index was down 0.8% to 103.03, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 2.6% to 2.808%.
Precious metals were on the rise with the price of gold adding 1.2% to $1,839 and silver rising 2.2% to $21.87.
Crude prices were up down. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $108.75 for a 0.4% loss, while the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $106.31 — a 0.7% decrease.
