Dep. Minister of European Affairs to participate in EU General Affairs Council

The situation in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine will be among the issues to be discussed at the EU General Affairs Council that will take place on Tuesday in Luxembourg. Cypriot Deputy Minister of European Affairs Marilena Raouna will also participate.

According to an official press release, Ministers will exchange views on the draft conclusions of the European Council which will take place in Brussels on 17-18 October.

The European Council is expected to discuss, among other things, the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, as well as EU competitiveness in the light of the recently published Draghi report on “The Future of European Competitiveness”.

The European leaders are also expected to discuss immigration. The European Council will also consider the course of preparations for the sessions of COP29 on climate change and COP16 on biological diversity. Depending on developments, the European Council may also address other foreign policy issues, including develo
pments in Georgia and Moldova.

The agenda also includes the EU-Switzerland relations, the adoption of the declaration on safeguarding Jewish life and combating anti-Semitism, and a follow-up of the European Parliament elections.

Moreover, the General Affairs Council will approve the country-specific recommendations on Member States’ economic, social, structural and fiscal policies for employment, in the context of the 2024 European Semester.

The Deputy Minister will also participate in the 2nd EU-Albania intergovernmental conference, which will take place on the same day in Luxembourg.

Later on, she will represent the Minister of Foreign Affairs at an EU-Gulf Cooperation Council working dinner in Brussels, ahead of the first EU-GCC Summit to be held in Brussels on October 16.
