Cyprus President to travel to Cairo for EU-Egypt strategic partnership deal

The President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides travels to Cairo on Sunday where he will participate in a Summit together with the President of the European Commission, the Prime Ministers of Greece, Italy and Belgium, the Chancellor of Austria and the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

A Presidency press release said that the Summit will inaugurate the EU-Egypt “comprehensive and strategic partnership”. The package will pave the way for a package of EU aid, grants, loans and investments in the country.

The relevant Joint Declaration will be signed by the President of the European Commission and the President of Egypt. The strategic partnership covers a total of six pillars related to political relations, economic stability, trade and investment, migration and mobility, security and demography and human capital.

The participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the Summit, the Presidency said, “highlights once again the geostrategic role of Cyprus in the region, as the closest EU member state, but
also a member state that has always maintained excellent relations with all neighboring states”.

Upon arrival in Cairo, EU leaders will travel to the Presidential Palace, where they will hold separate meetings with the President of Egypt.

This will be followed by a joint meeting of the seven heads of state or government, followed by extended talks between the delegations of the participating countries and the signing of the Joint Declaration.

President al-Sisi will host a dinner in honour of the six European leaders. The Cypriot delegation returns home late Sunday.
