Cypriot sailor Kontides wins North Sea Regatta 2023

Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides won the gold medal at the North Sea Regatta 2023 that took place at Seveningen between 26-28 May, where the World Sailing Championships will be held in August.

According to a press release, the Cypriot sailor won the gold medal by gaining three first places, two second and one third. He also had one 4th and one 5th place, while the two races in which he finished 8th and 11th were deleted.

Sailing races started on Friday (26/05) and completed on Sunday (28/05). The 33-year-old sailor had 19 penalty points, with Ireland's F. Lynch in second with 25p, while Hungary's J. Vadnai was third with 34p. Croatian T. Stipanovic, who is in the same training team as Pavlos Kontides, lost his place on the podium due to a penalty point (35b.).

"It was a hard race and I'm definitely happy and satisfied to win the gold medal, even though it was more like a training race" Kontides said, adding that he drew useful conclusions for the World Championships, which will also be the first qualification for the Olympic Games

Kontides will remain in the Netherlands until the end of the week and then will return at the end of July for the final preparation before the World Championships, which will take place from 8 until August 20.
