UN special rapporteur accuses Israel of blocking UNRWA chief’s access to Gaza

ANKARA: The UN special rapporteur on Palestine criticized Israel on Monday for barring the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) from entering Gaza, saying it is attempting to hinder witness accounts of "genocide." Francesca Albanese denounced Israel's refusal to grant Philippe Lazzarini access to the enclave in a post on X. Albanese shared Lazzarini's statement that Israeli authorities prevented him from entering Gaza and quoted him as saying: "The highest number of people ever recorded as facing human-made famine, along with mass killings, constant harm and creation of conditions that gut life of humanity has a name: Genocide." She also reacted to Lazzarini's lack of access to Gaza, adding: "Israel wants no witnesses, no truth-tellers." Lazzarini planned to visit the city of Rafah in southern Gaza on Monday but was informed that his entry into the area was denied. Meanwhile, the Israeli Foreign Ministry claimed that Lazzarini was not denied entry to Gaza. "On the day new data is out o n famine in GAZA, the Israeli Authorities deny my entry to Gaza," Lazzarini wrote on X. Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on Gaza since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023 which killed nearly 1,200 people. Christodoulides will be in Belgium where he will address the College of Europe in Bruges on Wednesday and will participate, the next day, in the European Council meeting in Brussels. Speaking earlier during a press briefing at UN headquarters in New York, Deputy UN's Spokesperson Farhan Haq said that Guterres will be meeting European leaders and the Heads of the institutions. Haq said that the UNSG has scheduled meetings with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. Scientists create most extensive depiction of cosmos encompassing 1,300 supermassive black holes

ISTANBUL: Scientists announced that they created a fresh depiction of the cosmos, encompassing 1.3 million supermassive black holes (SMBHs) positioned at the core of galaxies, Cosmos magazine reported Tuesday. The map, produced using data from the European Space Agency's Gaia space telescope, focused on mapping the stars in our own galaxy but inadvertently captured images of objects much further away. 'This quasar catalogue is different from all previous catalogues in that it gives us a three-dimensional map of the largest-ever volume of the universe,' said the map's co-creator, professor David Hogg from New York University. 'It isn't the catalogue with the most quasars, and it isn't the catalogue with the best-quality measurements of quasars, but it is the catalogue with the largest total volume of the universe mapped,' he said. He said the quasar catalog exemplifies the high productivity of astronomical projects. 'Gaia was designed to measure stars in our own galaxy, but it also found millions of quasa rs at the same time, which give us a map of the entire universe,' he added. SMBHs typically possess a mass ranging from 100,000 to 10 billion times that of the sun and are commonly situated in the central regions of galaxies.
