Türkiye aims for $265B in exports by end of 2023: Erdogan

Türkiye is looking to increase its exports to $265 billion by the end of 2023 "despite the negative global economic outlook," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

Erdogan's remarks came on Saturday as he was addressing the 30th Ordinary General Assembly of Turkish Exporters Assembly and Export Champions Award Ceremony in Ankara.

"Today, if we have products labelled with the stamp 'Made in Türkiye' even in the farthest places of the world, it is our exporters who have the most significant part in this," he said.

"Despite the negative global economic outlook, we want to increase our exports to $265 billion at the end of this year and $285 billion next year," Erdogan added.

Effects of quake 'diminishing'

The Turkish president also touched upon the negative effects on the economy caused by the February 6th twin earthquakes centred in southern Türkiye.

"The adverse effects of the earthquake on our economy are diminishing day by day," he said.

"Despite the disaster of the century, our exports continue their strong progress."

Erdogan also said that Türkiye's 2028 export target is "$400 billion and above."

"Hopefully, in 2023, we will witness 2 million health tourists and $3 billion in exports together."

Türkiye’s intelligence ‘neutralises’ wanted terrorist in Syria

The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has neutralised Yilmaz Behraresh, also known as Osman Nuri Ocakli, in Syria's Ayn Al Arab region, security sources said on Saturday.

Turkish intelligence has traced the footprint of Ocakli for a long time and pinpointed his location through the agents in the field who were not aware of each other.

Ocakli was one of the the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party (MLKP) Syria operatives and was wanted in the Red Category.

Ocakli was behind many attacks in Türkiye, including the 2022 attack on a vehicle carrying the prison guards in the northwestern Bursa province, and was in the red category on Türkiye's wanted terrorists' list, the sources said.

Major blow to MLKP

Ocakli's death is seen as a blow to the terror group, making it difficult for them to carry out attacks.

In January 2023, Turkish intelligence neutralised MLKP's top executive in Syria, Ahmet Shoresh, who was also known by the code name Zeki Gurbuz.

He operated as the so-called leader of FESK, the armed wing of the MLKP, since 2000.

Having close organizational relations with the PKK, Ocakli moved to the Qandil region of Iraq in November 2014 and started carrying out terrorist activities in the Rasulayn region of Syria in 2015.

As of April 2018, the terrorist responsible for illegal crossings between Türkiye and Syria on behalf of MLKP, became the "right-hand man” of Bayram Namaz, code-named Baran, the former MLKP’s so-called Syria leader. He became “the 3rd man of the organization in Syria.”

After Bayram Namaz was neutralized in 2019, Ocakli started his activities as an assistant to Zeki Gurbuz, codenamed Ahmet Sores, who was appointed as the so-called Syria Officer of MLKP, and continued his activities in Ayn al-Arab last year.

The MLKP was founded in 1994 and was added to Türkiye's active terror list in 2007.

The terror group is responsible for many attacks in Türkiye and northern Syria, including the 2004 bombing of a public bus in Istanbul that killed three civilians.

Turkish authorities arrest FETO ‘Turkmenistan Director’

Zekeriye Cerit, the so-called Turkmenistan director of the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), and another fugitive terrorist have been arrested by Turkish authorities in Istanbul.

Upon a tip off that the terrorists would flee abroad, two separate operations were carried out by the Security General Directorate and Turkish anti-terror police, according to information received by Anadolu.

During the operation, Zekeriye Cerit, who is on the "Wanted for Terrorism" list, was arrested in Istanbul for laundering money belonging to the organization in FETO-owned associations and for being the director of a terrorist organization in Turkmenistan.

$3,300 and €180 (approximately $197) in cash, fake identity cards, and a large number of digital materials were also seized during the operation.

FETO orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, in Türkiye, in which 251 people were killed and 2,734 injured.

The Selkirk man leading earthquake relief work in Turkey

The Scot leading the UK's humanitarian effort in devastated southern Turkey believes, after four months, the crisis is finally starting to ease.

Selkirk's Erlend Linklater oversaw the deployment of UK rescue teams in the hours after February's earthquakes.

The 48-year-old also helped establish a field hospital in the flattened Gaziantep district.

Erlend said: "Progress has been slow, but I would now say there is light at the end of the tunnel."

Almost 60,000 people died across southern Turkey and northern Syria when two huge earthquakes struck during 6 February.

Many more were injured and displaced as thousands of buildings either totally or partially collapsed.

Erlend has been in Turkey for four years working as a humanitarian adviser with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) as about 3.7 million refugees fled from the Syrian civil war.

Despite being previously based in some of the world's most war-torn countries, such as Afghanistan, Angola and southern Sudan, he was still shocked by the scale of death and damage.

"If you work in conflict areas, you are used to seeing destroyed buildings, but if they are near the front line then often the civilian population has been evacuated," he said.

"The scary thing about the earthquake is there was no warning and it happened at four o'clock in the morning when most people were asleep, meaning every collapsed building you look at is a mass graveyard.

"I've worked for a number of years in live conflicts with plenty of shooting and bombing going on, but in terms of the impact emotionally, this is one of the hardest things I've had to work on."

The Scot has remained at the forefront of the UK government's disaster relief effort since the earthquakes struck.

He initially oversaw the deployment of 77 search and rescue experts, and in the days after the deathly tremors, helped co-ordinate a joint field hospital for the FCDO and the Ministry of Defence in Gaziantep.

More than 20,000 patients have since been treated at the temporary medical base.

Erlend has also been involved in making sure UK government aid, worth a total of £43m, reaches the worst-affected communities.

He said: "I don't think there is a person in the affected areas who will not know somebody who has died. So many people are grieving.

"Some of the worst affected places like Hatay were places I knew well, visited frequently, and was fond of, which has compounded it and made it hit home even harder."

Although about 2.4 million people are still living in camps and other temporary sites, Erlend believes that, after four months, noticeable progress is now being made.

He added: "We are continuing to provide shelter, water sanitation and hygiene and doing everything we can to minimise the spread of disease.

"I am based in Ankara, but every time I go down I see progress.

"Although there is still a long way to go, I can say for the first time in more than four months that there is light at the end of the tunnel."

Erdogan: Berlusconi, a friend who brought Italy closer to Türkiye

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote a letter describing the camaraderie with his closest political ally, the former Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi, who passed away on Friday due to complications from a severe form of chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia.

In the letter published in the Italian daily Il Messaggero on Saturday, President Erdogan recalled his first meeting with Berlusconi in Rome on November 3, 2002, after he won the general elections in Türkiye.

In the letter, Erdogan returned to 1998, when he faced imprisonment and a political office ban in that year for reciting an Islamic poem at a political rally.

Following his release and the dissolution of the Welfare Party, he established the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to harmonise religious principles within a secular state.

The AK Party achieved a significant electoral triumph in 2002, and shortly after that, with a constitutional amendment, he assumed the role of Prime Minister.

"Although the Party, of which I was President, emerged victorious in the elections, our right to engage in politics has been unlawfully denied," President Erdogan wrote in the letter.

"While some in Türkiye tried to make this strangeness seem normal, Berlusconi was the first in the world to oppose it. My friend Berlusconi called and congratulated us on our electoral victory; he declared our political ban unacceptable.

During their meetings, the Turkish president also said that both leaders had broad discussions about bilateral relations and regional developments.

Türkiye and Italy have deepened their relations in every field, which has "enabled them to reach the highest level in history," Erdogan said.

Defence cooperation was one of the areas in which both countries have displayed progress. Berlusconi also backed the energy sector in Türkiye.

"Berlusconi's signed the contract for the Atak helicopter and provided serious support to Türkiye's Blue Stream Natural Gas Pipeline project," Erdogan noted.

Fulfilling the 'concept of a friend'

Türkiye's president stressed that he has met with Berlusconi on many occasions at NATO, the G20, the G8, the Arab League Summit, and the Nuclear Security Summit.

"We have hosted him many times in Türkiye. He was a person who did justice to the concept of a friend," Erdogan said.

The president noted that Berlusconi was a statesman who loved, respected, and added great value to Türkiye. He added that both leaders maintained their ties even after Berlusconi left office as Italian prime minister.

"My friend Berlusconi's testimony at my son's wedding in 2003 holds a special place in our personal history. We have never forgotten his kindness," Erdogan said.

"Mr Berlusconi also honoured us by being among the leaders who attended the inauguration ceremony, which we held in honour of my election as President of the Republic of Türkiye in 2018."

Berlusconi left 'indelible mark'

President Erdogan expressed immense grief over the news of Berlusconi's death in the letter.

"When I learned of the news of the death of my dear friend Silvio Berlusconi, with whom I have worked for many years, I felt great sadness."

President Erdogan said that he has dispatched his top diplomat and party spokesman to represent Türkiye at the funeral as a gesture of his friendship.

"He will always be remembered as a true friend with the fond memories he left in us."
