China Unicom and Huawei Roll out 1,000 MetaAAUs

BEIJING, July 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — China Unicom Beijing and Huawei have created the world’s largest commercial MetaAAU network as part of a project that has deployed MetaAAUs at over 1,000 rural network sites on the outskirts of Beijing. This new network has already seen a 38% increase in traffic per site by improving 5G services in rural areas. The MetaAAUs used by this network also reduce site energy consumption by 5% under the same network load compared with previous-generation AAUs, bolstering network energy efficiency. Their deployment represents an important step towards the green and digital village goals of the 5G Capital project.

MetaAAUs are the third-generation of 5G AAU developed by Huawei. They use the company’s new extreme-large antenna array (ELAA) architecture to double the scale of arrays compared with the previous-generation AAU. This innovation results in extended coverage because channel beams are narrower and energy is more focused. The new architecture, combined with innovative algorithms, improves network performance while slashing energy consumption. China Unicom Beijing’s has leveraged these advancements to hit its 2022 5G construction targets for small towns and rural areas which face unique challenges when it comes to inter-site distance, gigabit user experience, and green networking. China Unicom Beijing deployed these MetaAAUs at over 1,000 sites in July in towns and rural areas including the Shunyi, Huairou, and Pinggu districts of Beijing. The MetaAAUs have delivered a 40% increase in coverage area, increased uplink and downlink user-perceived rates by 10%, and lowered network energy consumption by 5% over previous-generation AAUs, achieving optimal network performance and energy efficiency. Since their deployment, user traffic has increased by 38% in their coverage areas and the carrier’s user base has increased by 37%.

Since commercialization efforts began three years ago,5G networks are becoming increasingly available outside of urban areas. For example, in Foyukou, a village outside Beijing, users have many more sales channels at their disposal thanks to the HD live broadcasts and direct photo posting on WeChat enabled by 5G. This has boosted sales and promoted the construction of “digital villages.” New applications for 5G are also emerging in areas like smart agriculture, remote education, and telemedicine. These scenarios require gigabit networks with smaller carbon footprints that perform at levels seen in urban areas.

Casio to Release EDIFICE with Case Design Featuring Race Car Suspension Motif

The SOSPENSIONE ECB-2000 is a high-performance chronograph that expresses a motorsports worldview with a unique case design modeled on a formula race car suspension. With a motif inspired by the double wishbone suspension used in formula race cars with pairs of upper and lower forked arms, the lugs that connect the bands to the case are configured in a four-arm arrangement. For the first time in an EDIFICE watch, the case is made with lightweight, highly durable carbon fiber-reinforced resin.

The new watch is available in three versions. The ECB-2000PB employs a soft urethane band for an extremely comfortable fit on the wrist, while the ECB-2000D and ECB-2000DC feature a sophisticated textural appeal with stainless-steel bands. The ECB-2000 uses the Tough Solar charging system, which converts light from fluorescent lamps and other sources to power the watch, as well as Mobile Link functions usable by pairing via Bluetooth® with a smartphone. Trump to make first return to Washington July 26

Former President Donald Trump will make his first return later this month to the US capital since leaving the office for what is being billed as a “major policy speech,” an organization announced on Thursday

The ex-president is expected to deliver closing remarks on the last day of the two-day America First Agenda Summit on July 26, a conference hosted by a pro-Trump group.

Trump’s speech comes as the House of Representatives committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection continues to hold hearings digging into the events of that day, during which Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol in a bid to prevent President Joe Biden from assuming office.

The House panel is slated to hold its next hearing July 21 following bombshell revelations from Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney that Trump attempted to contact one of the committee’s witnesses. The matter has been handed to the Justice Department for a potential witness tampering investigation.

Polling released Tuesday suggests that the former president’s hold on his party may be loosening with more than half of the party’s primary voters now aligning behind different presidential candidates.

Still, Trump holds 49% of the party’s support, according to the New York Times/Siena College poll. But support is particularly weak among Republicans aged 35 and younger, as well as those with college degrees.

About 20% of respondents said they believe Trump “went so far that he threatened American democracy” when he attempted to hold on to power after suffering a major electoral defeat to Biden, losing by 7 million votes.

Netflix partners with Microsoft for new subscription plan

Netflix has partnered with Microsoft on a new ad-supported subscription plan, according to an announcement Wednesday.

“At launch, consumers will have more options to access Netflix’s award-winning content. Marketers looking to Microsoft for their advertising needs will have access to the Netflix audience and premium connected TV inventory,” Microsoft said in a statement.

The deal, which had an undisclosed amount, supports Microsoft’s approach to privacy, which will protect customers’ information, it added.

“In April we announced that we will introduce a new lower priced ad-supported subscription plan for consumers, in addition to our existing ads-free basic, standard, and premium plans,” said Netflix COO Greg Peters.

The agreement comes after Netflix resisted ad-support for years and the streaming company lost 200,000 subscribers during the first three months of the year, marking its first loss in users since October 2011.

The company cited account sharing, revenue decline and rising competition as major issues.
