Turkey contributes to stability in Balkans, says Bosniak leader

Sefik Dzaferovic, the Bosniak member of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tripartite presidency, on Tuesday praised Turkey’s role in maintaining stability in the Balkans.

Dzaferovic told Anadolu Agency that Turkey is a “true friend” of Bosnia and Herzegovina as it supports the 26-year-old Dayton Agreement which ended war in the country.

“The Republic of Turkey supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and state institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina without compromise. As a member of the Peace Implementation Council, Turkey also supports the EU and NATO path,” he added.

He added that Turkey’s attitude toward “cooperation and common interests” in Bosnia and Herzegovina is based on the peaceful coexistence of all ethnicities in the country.

As part of his official visit to Sarajevo on Monday, Turkey’s National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar met with Zeljko Komsic, Croat member and current chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with its Serb member Milorad Dodik and Dzaferovic.

Turkey arrests 5 Daesh/ISIS terror suspects

Turkish security forces nabbed at least five Daesh/ISIS terror suspects in operations launched to prevent terror activities ahead of the New Year holiday, security sources said on Tuesday.

In the central Kayseri province, counter-terror teams began operations against suspects who had entered the country illegally and were suspected of carrying out terrorist activities in Syria and Iraq.

The five suspects — all Syrian and Iraqi nationals — were arrested in simultaneous operations carried out at different locations, the sources said.

Turkey was one of the first countries to declare Daesh/ISIS a terror group.

The country has since been attacked by the terror organization multiple times. It has carried out at least 10 suicide bombings, seven bomb attacks and four armed attacks, killing 315 people and injuring hundreds more.

In response, Turkey launched anti-terror operations at home and abroad to prevent further attacks.

Turkey attaches importance to ties with US Muslim community

Turkey attaches importance to healthy and strong relations with the Muslim community in the US, the country’s presidential spokesman said on Tuesday.

Ibrahim Kalin’s remarks came at the gala dinner of the Muslim American Society and Islamic Circle of North America (MAS-ICNA) Convention, one of the largest Islamic conventions held annually in North America.

The Turkish official said faith was more than just a belief system as it was also related to matters of spirituality, justice and goodness.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his part, sent a video-message for the event in which he called for further strengthening solidarity against cultural racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia — which have gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“All Muslims are brothers and sisters, regardless of their origin, skin color, nation, culture, sect,” Erdogan said, adding that Islam had no room for exclusion, incitement or terror.

The Turkish leader called on Muslims not to retire into their shell in the face of threats against their existence and endeavor to take their rightful place in the world.

Death toll from Bangladesh’s ferry fire surges to 39

Another body was recovered from the Sugandha river Tuesday morning, pushing the death toll from the deadliest ferry fire in Bangladesh to 39 as a search operation for the missing passengers continues, according to official sources.

On Dec. 24, the passenger ferry, MV Ovijan, caught fire in the river while heading to the southern district of Barguna from the capital Dhaka.

The body of a 28-year-old male passenger was found floating at the Kistakathi area of southern Jhalakathi district Tuesday morning.

“A patrolling team recovered the body from the accident area, bringing the number of bodies found so far to 38,” additional deputy commissioner of Jhalakathi district, Nazmul Alam Nabin, told Anadolu Agency.

Besides, one more critically injured passenger died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Saturday, according to hospital sources.

Some local media reports, however, are putting the casualties at between 42 and 44.

About 40 burn patients are under treatment at different medical facilities in Dhaka and the southern Barisal division.

Meanwhile, police arrested Hamjalal Sheikh, one of the owners of the ill-fated ferry, on Monday in connection with the accident.

A court had ordered the arrest of four owners and four master drivers of the commuter ferry, locally known as launch.

Besides, a case was filed with the country’s higher court on Monday, seeking a compensation of 5 million Bangladeshi Taka (some $60,240) for the family of each dead passenger while 2 million Taka ($24,000) for every injured.

To identify 23 charred bodies buried in a mass grave in the southern district of Barguna, DNA samples from 33 relatives of the fire victims were collected.

“We want to identify all the bodies through medical tests,” Md. Habibur Rahman, deputy commissioner of southern Barguna district, told Anadolu Agency.

Search for the missing passengers is still continuing at different points, he added.

The local unit of the Red Crescent Society has compiled a list of 51 missing passengers.

80% of NATO fighter jet missions responded to Russian military aircraft

Nearly 80% of NATO fighter jet missions across Europe were launched in response to Russian military aircraft flights in 2021, NATO said on Tuesday.

“NATO fighter jets scrambled around 370 times across Europe in 2021, mostly to check aircraft flying unannounced near Allied air space,” the military alliance announced in a press statement.

According to NATO, 290 of the missions, which is 80% of the total deployments, were launched in response to flights by Russian military aircraft.

“NATO fighter jets are on duty around the clock, ready to take off in case of unverified flights near the airspace of our Allies,” NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu commented on the announcement.

Most of the unverified flights – unannounced military flights or civilian aircraft losing communication with air controllers – were intercepted in the Baltic region.

Only a very few intercepted flights could actually enter the airspace controlled by NATO since the jets identified them and escorted them out, the statement added.

There are over 60 jets on high alert for NATO air-policing missions for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, as well as for Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Slovenia.
