Iraeli police injure 10 Palestinians in Jerusalem

The Israeli forces on Sunday injured at least 10 people protesting in support of Palestinian activists in occupied East Jerusalem.

Palestinians staged the protest outside an Israeli police station on Salah al-Din Street to support the detained activists.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said in a statement that the Israeli police used rubber bullets and stun grenades against the protestors.

It said four Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets and another six, including two children and a first-aid professional, by stun grenades. One of the injured was hospitalized, it added.

In April, an Israeli court ruled to evict eight Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in favor of settlement groups, triggering tension across the Palestinian territories.

Israeli authorities, however, postponed giving a final decision on the eviction orders until December under Palestinian mass protests, including 11 days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza, and international pressure.

– Palestinian youth heavily injured in West Bank

Meanwhile, Israeli police heavily injured a young Palestinian protesting against illegal Jewish settlement in Ramallah city in the occupied West Bank, with a live round.

Palestine’s Health Ministry said the Palestinian sustained injury to the head and was hospitalized.

Israeli attacks in Gaza and the West Bank killed at least 289 people, including women and children, and left behind a trail of destruction. Health centers and media offices, as well as schools, were among the structures targeted.

Trkey needs holistic approach for Islamic finance: Expert

Turkey will have a considerable position in conventional and Islamic finance, according to a Turkish lecturer.

And it should shape financial instruments with a holistic approach under Islamic finance principles for the full development of Islamic finance for Turkey.

Ankara’s moves to become a leading actor in global Islamic finance are admirable, said Hamdi Donduren, the head of the Islamic Economics and Finance Department at Konya Karatay University.

Islamic finance should not be treated as Islamic banking and the financial sector should also cover insurance, treasury operations and accounting and regulatory transactions, he said.

“Even banks are interest-free. We would not have done business in accordance with Islamic finance if you cannot perform all your financial transactions within the framework of Islamic finance instruments.

“For this, we need fintech applications used in financial circles, Islamic insurance companies, Islamic investment funds and Islamic sensitive capital market intermediary institutions,” he said.

Touching on the academic side in Turkey, he stressed that it is hopeful that academics in Turkey want to focus on the Islamic finance field.

“The Islamic finance sector is a newly developing sector in the world and Turkey has carried out studies simultaneously with the world,” he said.

With the participation of state lenders in this field, confidence in Turkey has been boosted related to Islamic finance, he said. “Our country will become one of the leading countries in this field both in sectoral and academic terms in the coming years.”

– Global demand

The Islamic finance industry, which dates to the 1960s, has achieved significant successes and has caught a serious growth trend today, said Donduren.

In this process, the work of governments, especially in Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Iran and Gulf countries, and international organizations such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Islamic Development Bank, have made significant contributions to the development of Islamic finance, he noted.

Particularly in the last 15 – 20 years, Turkey made serious progress in terms of institutional and legal regulations, he said.

Countries that advance in financial services, such as the UK and Luxembourg, have shown interest in Islamic finance for many years, according to Donduren, and the US also has a high level of interest in Islamic finance products, especially through large investment funds in capital markets.

– International conference

Mentioning the First Karatay International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance (KARCIEF), organized by his school in May with international participation, he said the chairmen of commerce chambers, officials and academics addressed the seminar.

The two-day event discussed six topics, including Islamic finance, Islamic capital markets, financial technologies, and SMEs.

The school also plans to make it an annual event, he added.

Saying that the university accepted the first Islamic economy and finance students in 2016, he stressed there are only two universities in Turkey active in the field.

There is good interest among students in Turkey and he noted the country’s education institutions started studies for Islamic economy and finance.

“Institutes, research centers and postgraduate programs were established in many universities. Also this year, for the first time, a state university obtained establishment permission for the undergraduate department of Islamic economy and finance,” he said.

All of this may make Turkey a leading country in this area, he said.

UDATE – Senior PKK terrorist neutralized by Turkish forces: Erdogan

A so-called senior PKK terrorist has been neutralized by Turkish forces, the nation’s president announced on Sunday.

“Selman Bozkir, code-named ‘Doctor Huseyin,’ the senior manager of the PKK terrorist organization and general manager of Makhmur (Iraq), was neutralized by the heroes of our National Intelligence Organization (MIT) yesterday (Saturday),” Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter.

Turkish authorities use the word “neutralize” to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

Erdogan said Turkey would not allow the “treacherous and separatist organization” to use Iraq’s Makhmur district as an “incubation center” for terrorism.

“We will continue to eradicate terrorism at its source,” he stressed.

Two more terrorists were neutralized together with Bozkir in the operation on the PKK’s Makhmur camp, according to a security source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Bozkir was wanted by the MIT as he was functioning as a ringleader in the site, portrayed as a refugee camp but actually serving as a recruitment and training area for the PKK.

He had joined the terror group in the 1960s and organized its activities in Europe for years. He was also responsible for its activities in the UK during that time.

Before he was sent to Makhmur, Bozkir managed the flow of illicit funds for the terror group in northern Iraq. Then he was made responsible for Makhmur as the PKK was cornered by Turkish operations in Qandil.

Turkish intelligence found out that the camp was as important as Qandil for the PKK terrorists and that they were recruiting and training members for their activities under the disguise of the camp.

The PKK takes the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq as its stronghold and is active in many cities and towns. It occupies a large number of villages in the region and launches attacks on Turkey’s interior.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU — has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.

US provides medical training to YPG/PKK terrorists

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it provided a medical class for YPG/PKK terrorists — using the name SDF — guarding oil facilities under its occupation.

“Medics with Alabama National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 173rd Infantry Regiment (Task Force War Club) along with Soldiers from the United States Army’s 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment conducted a medical class for members of Syrian Democratic Force’s (SDF) Critical Petroleum Infrastructure Guard (CPIG) at the CPIG Academy in May 2021,” CENTCOM said on its website.

The YPG/PKK terror group uses the acronym SDF, which comprises Kurdish and Arab fighters battling ISIS/Daesh, as a cover for receiving international support.

The US-backed SDF is spearheaded by the YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK. The PKK is a designated terrorist organization in the US, Turkey and EU, and Washington’s support for its Syrian affiliate has been a major strain on relations with Ankara.

Noting that the terror group is responsible for protecting the petrol infrastructure in eastern Syria, CENTCOM said: “The TF War Club medics taught lifesaving interventions and techniques that focused on traumatic wounds to members of the CPIG Academy.

“Medics taught tourniquet application, wound packing and dressing, pressure bandages and junctional wound packing and wrapping.”

It added that those who finished the training were presented a certificate of completion, adding that the Task Force War Club was deployed in the CENTCOM region to support its anti-Daesh/ISIS Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Spartan Shield, which carries out different missions in the Middle East.

Bangladesh extends lockdown as Indian strain infects 7 more

Bangladesh extended its countrywide lockdown for another 10 days on Sunday, with particular concern for districts along the border with India, from which the “Delta strain” of COVID-19 has spread to other countries.

The Cabinet issued a notification extending the current two-month lockdown until June 16, which was imposed on April 5 after the second coronavirus wave hit the country hard, claiming hundreds of lives.

Since then, the government has tightened restrictions on public gatherings, including social, political, and religious events, as well as measures on restaurants, tourist attractions, resorts, and community centers during the lockdown period.

Following the latest notification, local authorities have placed seven districts bordering India under complete lockdown.

In the last week, the border district of Rajshahi has witnessed a 55% increase in COVID-19-related casualties, whereas the entire country has reported a 25% increase in the fatality ratio.

Meanwhile, as the lockdown was extended, educational institutions also will not reopen on the scheduled date of June 13, the deputy education minister told the media.

– Efforts to bring vaccines from Russia, China, US

Foreign Minister A. K. Abdul Momen said in a statement on Sunday that the country was keen to procure 5 million doses of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine from Russia. The Health Ministry is working on this, he added.

Bangladesh is on the verge of securing a vaccine procurement agreement with Russia, he said, adding that “vaccines from China and the US will come soon as the government has increased efforts to bring vaccines.”

The country stepped up its efforts only after India suspended shipments of vaccines under a tripartite agreement, leaving 1.4 million Bangladeshis uncertain of their second doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca shot, according to a separate statement issued by the Health Ministry on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the country’s drug regulatory authority approved the Chinese vaccine CoronaVac for emergency use on Sunday, making it the fifth jab to be administered to the public.

Earlier, China gifted 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and promised to send another 600,000 by June 13.

– COVID-19 cases

According to the ministry, the country reported 38 more deaths, bringing the total number of virus-related fatalities to 12,839, and COVID-19 infections to 810,990, with over 1,676 fresh additions in the last 24 hours.

Among these, health officials have detected seven more instances of the Indian strain of coronavirus in a group of laborers in Dhaka, bringing the total “Delta” variant infections to 39 so far.

On April 26, the country closed its land borders with India until June 14. Despite the travel ban, over 4,000 Bangladeshis returned from India in a month due to the high infection rates in India.

Plitical attacks, killings frame Mexico’s upcoming elections

Mexico’s upcoming midterm elections on Sunday is one of the most violent in the country’s history.

The numbers bear witness from a consultancy firm, Etellekt, that released statistics on political violence in Mexico in February 2018. That year it said that 774 attacks on politicians, with 152 deaths were reported at the end of the electorate process.

The elections on June 6 have surpassed those figures, with 782 attacks reported between September 2020 to May 2021.

During that time, 89 candidates have been murdered.

Etellekt’s fifth report details that of the fatalities, up to 75% were part of opposition parties opposed to state governments.

That is an increase from the 69%, or 152 murdered politicians, who were opposed to their respective state governments in 2018.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador tried to put a positive spin on the numbers by saying the current elections are not more violent than previous polls and that most culprits have been charged.

“I say this not only to inform; I say it so that those who misbehave are not thinking that they are going to commit an offense and nothing is going to happen because they are well connected and have bought the authorities — that no longer applies. Whoever commits a crime is punished,” he said.

But most of the cases remain unpunished. Out of 34 murders of candidates, just six resulted in an arrest. Amounting to 14 charges of alleged perpetrators.

Of the 89 murdered politicians, 39 belong to a coalition of political parties opposed to the current ruling party, and 25 of the reported assassinations were members of the ruling political team.

With 15 different estate governors running for office, control of the lower house and 20,000 local public positions up for grabs, these elections are set to be one of the biggest in Mexico’s history.

’loody traces of Mladic are all over Bosnia’

The bloody traces of former a Serb general known as the “Butcher of Bosnia” can be found all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the head of the Srebrenica Memorial Center said on Sunday.

Thousands of Bosnians are waiting for the final verdict in the ethnic cleansing case against Ratko Mladic, to be announced on June 8 by the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.

Emir Suljagic, the center’s director, who has extensively worked on the genocide victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s historic town of Srebrenica, said some of the victims’ relatives may have their high expectations for the verdict against Mladic disappointed on that day.

“Satisfaction is relative. Victims who have experienced Mladic’s atrocities may be disappointed that day. Some might say he got what he deserved,” Suljagic told Anadolu Agency.

The real issue, according to Suljagic, is the political class that continues to maintain Mladic’s legacy.

“What do we do with the political class that continues to perpetuate Mladic’s work and legacy after his conviction? Mladic did not leave his bloody traces only in Srebrenica. There are traces in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Do not forget that Mladic was personally involved in the siege of Sarajevo,” said Suljagic.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is awaiting June 8 and “we will never be hostages of Mladic ideology. Now we are writing our own history,” said Suljagic.

The 78-year-old former general was sentenced by the UN court to life imprisonment in 2017 for genocide in Srebrenica and crimes against humanity between 1992 and 1995.

However, Mladic is also known for his forces’ bloody 1,425-day siege of Sarajevo, the longest a capital city has suffered in the history of modern warfare.

Mladic was once Europe’s most wanted man after his role in the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995.

– Srebrenica genocide

More than 8,300 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed after Bosnian Serb forces attacked the UN “safe area” of Srebrenica in July 1995, despite the presence of Dutch troops tasked with acting as international peacekeepers.

Srebrenica was besieged by Serb forces who were trying to wrest territory from Bosnian Muslims and Croats to form a state.

The UN Security Council declared Srebrenica a “safe area” in the spring of 1993. However, Serb troops led by Gen. Ratko Mladic, who was later found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, overran the UN zone.

Dutch troops failed to act as Serb forces occupied the area, killing 2,000 men and boys on July 11.

About 15,000 Srebrenicans fled to the surrounding mountains, but Serb troops hunted down and killed 6,000 in the forests.
