CGTN: China to prioritize conservation in its water diversion project

BEIJING, May 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — China will press ahead with the world’s largest water diversion project and prioritize water conservation in the process.

As the country pursues green and high-quality development, efforts should be made to advance the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in a scientific manner and promote the effective and economical use of water resources, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Friday.

Xi made the remarks at a symposium on advancing the high-quality follow-up development of the project in Nanyang, central China’s Henan Province, following an inspection tour that began on Wednesday.

He called for safeguarding ecological security and promoting balanced spatial distribution of water resources in the country.

3,000 West Lakes, 120 million people

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project links the Yangtze River, the Huaihe River, the Yellow River and the Haihe River. It is aimed at providing a permanent solution to the water shortage in northern China by diverting water from the country’s water-rich southern regions.

The grand project consists of three routes, among which the first phase the eastern and middle routes went into operation in 2013 and 2014 respectively. The western route is still at a pre-construction stage.

As of early April, the project had transferred 41.8 billion cubic meters of water to the northern areas, which was equivalent to the water volume of nearly 3,000 West Lakes – a renowned scenic area in Hangzhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province. More than 120 million people had directly benefited from the project.

Xi’s inspection tour and the symposium came at a time when China gears up for planning and implementing the next stage of the project. According to the Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035, efforts will be made to advance the follow-up development of the eastern and middle routes of the project and the appraisal of plans for the western route.

Elaborating on how to advance the project in a scientific manner, Xi called for efforts to strengthen demand and supply management, maximize overall benefits of the project, prioritize water conservation and enhance the protection of ecological environment. He also called for accelerating efforts to build a national water network and ensure national water security.

Xi hails sacrifice by resettled residents

The place where President Xi chose to convene the meeting is of great significance to the water diversion project. Located in the southwest of Henan Province bordering Hubei Province, Nanyang is the starting point of the middle route, which carries water from Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China through Henan and Hebei provinces all the way to Beijing and Tianjin in the north.

More than 40 big and medium-sized cities receive water from the project, and in Beijing, around 70 percent of the tap water is pumped in through the middle route.

More than 345,000 people living in Danjiangkou Reservoir area have moved to more than 600 government-built villages to make way for the project. Xi went to one of those villages to visit the relocated residents on Thursday.

In the village of Zouzhuang in Xichuan County, he hailed the spirit of sacrifice of the villagers and wished them a better life. The resettled residents deserve the thanks from those who benefit from the project and people across the nation, he said.

At Friday’s symposium, Xi urged authorities to work out economical plans for the next phase of the project and minimize the number of people that need to be relocated.

Pro-Palestinian rallies in Jordan condemn Israeli aggression

Hundreds of Jordanians continued to rally Friday in support of Palestine and denounced Israeli aggression.

About 4,000 protesters marched in Amman, briefly stopping near the Israeli Embassy.

Demonstrators converged in front of the Al-Husseini Mosque after Friday prayers and marched to Al-Nakhil Square carrying Palestinian flags.

Similar protests were reported in other governorates, including Irbid, Ajloun, Mafraq, Tafila, Karak, Aqaba and Zarqa.

Demonstrations have been ongoing since last Friday, with protesters demanding a strong response from Arab-Muslim countries and the international community to halt Israeli aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip and Palestinian territories.

Government spokesman Sakhr Dudin said in a statement that the rallies express Jordanians “consistent and historical position in support of the Palestinian brothers and support for the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

He said Jordanians are united in their support for Palestine despite their challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic and stressed that the people and the state’s stance are “identical.”

Israel continues to carry out raids and shelling on Gaza, where 122 Palestinians, including 31 children and 20 women, have been killed, in addition to 950 injuries.

Ibrahimovic to miss EURO 2020 for knee injury

AC Milan’s Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss this summer’s UEFA EURO 2020 for a knee injury, the country’s football body said on Saturday.

The Swedish Football Association said on Twitter that 39-year-old Ibrahimovic told Swedish national team manager Janne Andersson that his injury would prevent him from playing in the EURO 2020 as the tournament will start on June 11.

Ibrahimovic previously left the national team after the EURO 2016 but returned to play for his nation in March.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star scored 62 goals in 118 matches for Sweden since his international debut in 2001.

Ibrahimovic will remain with the Italian Serie A side AC Milan for another season, extending his deal with the Rossoneri in April.

This season Ibrahimovic scored 17 goals in 27 appearances for his club.

Sweden will play against Spain, Slovakia, and Poland in the EURO 2020 Group E.

Israeli warplanes carries out nearly 30 airstrikes on Gaza Strip

The Israeli army carried out nearly 30 airstrikes in northern Gaza Strip, Anadolu Agency reported late Friday from the region.

Electricity was cut in much of the area in the north because of attacks targeting the Education Directorate, civilian homes and a mosque.

The Health Ministry in Gaza has not released a statement about casualties but witnesses said they counted dead and injured civilians.

– Palestine vs. Israel

Israeli forces in recent days have attacked Palestinians protesting in solidarity with residents of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, who were evicted by an Israeli court.

The occupying forces also raided Al-Aqsa Mosque during special night prayers during Ramadan.

The subsequent escalation of tensions resulted in airstrikes by Israel on Gaza, killing more than 120 Palestinians, including children and women, according to health officials. At least 920 others have been injured, in addition to heavy damage to residential buildings.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. It annexed the entire city in 1980, in a move never recognized by the international community.

Turkey: Nearly 500,000 teachers set to get COVID shots

With a national lockdown nearing its end, nearly half a million teachers and school staffers will be vaccinated for COVID-19, Turkey’s National Education Ministry said on Saturday.

Vaccination appointments have been made for 499,000 personnel, including ones for preschool, primary school, and village schools plus other education staff, according to ministry officials.

The figure makes up around 40% of the teachers and school staff in Turkey.

On Friday, Turkey reported more than 11,000 new coronavirus cases, as daily infections continue to drop amid a nationwide lockdown set to conclude on Monday.

Following the lockdown, restrictions may be eased depending on progress in fighting the virus, according to officials.

Turkey has administered over 25.6 million coronavirus jabs since launching a mass vaccination campaign in mid-January, according to official figures.

More than 14.8 million people have received their first dose, while 10.7 million have been fully vaccinated.

Trkey’s exports to Libya jumped 58% in January-April

Turkey’s exports to Libya rose 58% year-on-year in the first four months of 2021 to $826 million, said a top Turkish trade group on Saturday.

While Turkey’s overall exports were up 33.1% this January-April, this increase in Libya reached 58%, almost double the general average, said Murtaza Karanfil, chairman of the Turkey-Libya Council of the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK).

In April alone, Karanfil told Anadolu Agency that exports to Libya skyrocketed 228% to $263.3 million compared to the same period last year, showing that strong bilateral ties are clearly being reflected in trade.

“We know that the Turkish private sector is enthusiastic about completing missing projects and taking part in new projects in Libya,” he said, referring to work that had to be abandoned due years of turmoil in the North African country.

Libya has needs that have accumulated especially due to the situation over the last 10 years – since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi and the ensuing chaos – and need to be resolved quickly, he stressed.

With an interim government formed under a February peace deal, Libya has recently emerged from years of conflict to move towards elections this December.

-Turkish advantage

“Our Turkish contractors have important duties in terms of both the infrastructure and superstructure for rebuilding of country,” said Karanfil.

Areas where Turkish investors could play a larger role in Libya in the coming years include energy, defense industry, food, recycling, and chemicals.

Although the country has a population of 6 million, a lot of products enter its market, and annual exports of $10 billion annually if the infrastructure is established is no dream, Karanfil said.

Saying that Turkish investors have a good command of the culture of doing business in Libya, he said Turkey enjoys an advantage in this regard.

“There is no security problem for Turks who want to do business in the country, and Turkish investors who serve are protected by Libyans.”

He also highlighted Libya is a gateway to the African continent through which Turkish business people can boost their exports to the continent in short order.

Noting that they are continuing initiatives to establish an international logistics base in Libya, he said:

“Our exports will be easily able to reach 53 African countries and a population of 1 billion from this logistics center.”

This base, which is in the financial evaluation stage, will be built entirely through local resources, he added.

Lewandowski nets 40 league goals to level Muller’s record

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski on Saturday equalized the German football legend Gerd Muller’s 40-goal single-season record that he has been holding for 49 years.

“HE’S DONE IT! ROBERT #LEWANG40LSKI. @Lewy_Official [Lewandowski] has matched Gerd Muller’s legendary #Bundesliga record of 40 goals in a single season,” the German Bundesliga said on Twitter to hail Lewandowski.

This season’s German champions Bayern Munich, drew with Freiburg 2-2 on Saturday as 32-year-old Lewandowski scored from a penalty kick in the first half.

The Polish star can now break Muller’s record that the 75-year-old set in the 1971-72 season.

Bayern Munich will take on Augsburg in the next fixture on Saturday, May 22, at home as the 2020-21 season in the Bundesliga will end after the 34th-week matches.

The 1974 FIFA World Cup winner with Germany, Muller was one of the famous Bayern Munich forwards, who played for the Bavarians in 1964-1979.
