We must persist with our strategy for Cyprus solution, House President says

We have no other way but to stick to our strategy for the solution of the Cyprus issue, President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, said during her meeting with a delegation of the Turkish-occupied municipalities of Kyrenia, Lapithos and Karavas, which took place on Thursday at the House of Representatives, in Nicosia. The delegation presented Demetriou with a petition that was approved at an event held on 22nd July to mark the 50 years of the Turkish invasion in Cyprus.

Demetriou emphasised that “no matter how many years pass, we do not forget”, adding that “we will continue the struggle for redemption, liberation and reunification of our country”.

As she said, “we will not concede any part of the occupied territory to the conqueror. We realise more than ever how relentless time is, how many new faits-accomplis we have to deal with apart from Turkey’s tactics.”

Therefore, as Demetriou went on to say, “we have no other way than to stick to our strategy for resolving the Cyprus problem.”

S
he also stated that she will forward the petition to the MPs.

The petition, signed by organised groups representing the Turkish-occupied Kyrenia district, stresses that “no matter how many years pass, we will continue to fight for liberation and return to our homes and land.” It adds that “we seek a fair and functional solution of the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations”.

Furthermore, the international community is called upon to put pressure on Turkey to withdraw the occupying troops and put an end to its intransigent attitude.

Finally, the President of the House of Representatives is invited to exert her influence on all European parliaments “so that they stand in solidarity with the just claims of the people of Kyrenia and all refugees in their struggle for return and justice.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotia
tions, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
