We continue the effort to find common ground for the sake of both communities in Cyprus, UNSG’s Spokesperson, Stefan Dujarric said on Friday during his press briefing at the UN Headquarters, in New York.
Dujarric was asked by the Cyprus News Agency regarding recent statements by Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan that a solution on the Cyprus issue is impossible to reach, if the “equal rights” of the Turkish Cypriots are ignored, insisting on a “two state solution”, as the UNSG’s Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar continues her efforts to find common ground between the two sides.
‘We’ve seen the statement obviously and we continue through the work of our ?nvoy to find that common ground for the sake of all the people in Cyprus, for the sake of both communities to resolve an issue that is in the international agenda for quite some time,’ Dujarric stressed.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far
failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
