We are working methodically, on the basis of a specific plan, in order to create the conditions for the resumption of talks, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday evening in Limassol.
In his address at the presentation of a book on EOKA fighter Nikos Sofokleous by Maro Thoma Sofroniou, in the presence of Archbishop Georgios, President Christodoulides reiterated that the resolution of the Cyprus problem is the number one priority of the Government.
"We are working methodically, on the basis of a specific plan, in order to create the conditions for the resumption of a new effort in the UN framework, with enhanced EU participation, so that the outcome is such that it justifies the struggles and aspirations of our people", he added.
He also assured that "we are doing everything humanly possible to create the political and diplomatic framework for dialogue, where we will proceed with honesty, realism, determination, but also with confidence, faith and assertiveness".
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
