Voting continues in EP, local administration elections in Cyprus

Voting continues in Cyprus for the election of the country's six new members of the European Parliament but also Presidents of the District Organisations of Local Government, Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Municipal Councillors, Members of the School Boards, Community Leaders and members of the Community Councils. Out of the total number of voters, 133,518 vote at 321 polling stations of the four new municipalities and 46,650 vote at 107 polling stations of the communities. The remaining 66 polling stations concern occupied municipalities and communities. Specifically, 51 polling stations operate for occupied municipalities and 20,182 voters, while 15 polling stations operate for occupied communities and 5,453 voters. There are 220,736 registered voters in the Nicosia district, which includes 143 Turkish Cypriots. Similarly, the special electoral register of European citizens for the elections of local authority officials includes 21,640 voters, of which 4,048 are in Nicosia. A total of 114 polling stations operat e in the government-controlled areas of Famagusta district on Sunday. According to data provided by the Chief Returning Officer, the number of voters who will exercise their right to vote amounts to 37,256 persons. A total of 315 polling stations operate in the city and district of Larnaka on Sunday. A total of 100,001 voters have the right to vote for members of the European Parliament, 98,082 Greek Cypriots, 249 Turkish Cypriots and 1,670 Community citizens. Also, 101,867 persons have the right to vote in the city and district of Larnaka for the election of Local Government Authorities, namely 99,093 Greek Cypriots, 249 Turkish Cypriots and 2,525 Community Citizens. In Paphos, the election process started without problems on time. Ten candidates compete for Mayor, 43 for Deputy Mayors, 237 candidates for members of Municipal Councils and 73 candidates for members of School Boards, 152 community leaders and members of 559 community councils make up the ballot papers for the four Municipalities of the Pap hos District. Polls opened on time at the 494 polling stations in the Limassol district for the 180,168 voters who will be invited to vote for members of the European Parliament, Local Government Authorities and members of School Boards. There are 58,302 voters in the nine Turkish occupied municipalities who have the right to vote on Sunday for mayors and municipal councillors. A total of 24 candidates for mayor and 240 candidates for municipal councillors are vying for seats in the Municipal Councils of Famagusta, Kyrenia, Morfou, Lysi, Lapithos, Lefkoniko, Akanthou, Kythrea and Karavas. According to information released this week by the Chief Returning Officer, a total of 58,302 voters from Turkish occupied Municipalities have the right to vote in the Municipal Elections of June 9.
