Von der Leyen to announce any details on Lebanon aid on Thursday, spokesperson says

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will visit Lebanon on Thursday, May 2nd, along with Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides, Commission head spokesperson Eric Mamer confirmed responding to questions during the Commission’s midday briefing in Brussels. Mamer avoided confirming whether Von der Leyen would announce a funding package for the country while in Beirut.

‘President VDL will be in Lebanon on Thursday with the Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. They will meet the Prime Minister of Lebanon as well as the speaker of the Parliament,’ Mamer said.

Called to comment on reports regarding the size of the package, Mamer said only that ‘you will have to wait until Thursday when the president is in Lebanon for further details on any announcement that she might make when she is there.’

When asked whether the visit’s agenda will also include the wider situation in the region, and whether there is a connection with a recent visit to Lebanon by French Foreign Minister, Stéphane Séj
ourné, which focused on the situation along the Lebanese – Israeli border, the spokesperson noted that President Von der Leyen ‘is in constant contact with member states, including with France, on developments related to the region that we are discussing and to Lebanon’.
