US stocks finish Monday mixed, Nasdaq in negative territory

US stocks closed mixed on Monday, while the Nasdaq finished the first trading day of the week in negative territory. The blue-chip Dow was up 66 points, or 0.2%, to 33,875. The S and P 500 rose three points, or 0.1%, to close at 4,137. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, on the other hand, fell 35 points, or 0.29%, to end the session at 12,037. The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.2% to 16.80. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1.8% to 3.509%. The dollar index lost 0.4% to 101.37, while the euro rose 0.5% to $1.1045 against the greenback. Precious metals were in positive territory, with the price of gold adding 0.2% to $1,987 per ounce and silver rising 0.2% to $25.14 an ounce. Oil prices rose more than 1%, with the price of global benchmark Brent crude at $82.44 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude sitting at $78.71.
