US stocks close higher for third consecutive day

The US stock market closed higher Tuesday for a third consecutive trading day as it recovered from major selloffs in January.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 272 points, or 0.77%, to end at 35,404. The S&P 500 added 30 points, or 0.68%, to 4,546.

The Nasdaq was up 106 points, or 0.75%, to finish at 14,346.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was down 11.2% to 22.05 but still managed to stay above the critical level of 20.

The dollar index lost 0.27% to 96.28, but the yield on 10-year US Treasury notes added 1.1% to 1.802%.

Precious metals were on the rise with gold adding 0.22% to $1,801 per ounce and silver increasing 0.8% to $22.64.

Crude oil was up around 0.2% with Brent crude trading at $89.37 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $88.37.
