US stock market opens lower with volatility on rise

Major indexes in the US stock market opened lower on Friday, as volatility was on the rise once again.

The Dow was down 9 points, or 0.03%, to 34,742 at 9.41 a.m. EDT, while the S&P 500 decreased 9 points, or 0.2%, to 4,464.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 44 points, or 0.3%, to 15,137.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, continued its increase by adding 0.5% to 18.79.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes jumped 3.3% to 1.375%, but the dollar index was flat at 92.92.

Oil prices fell for the second consecutive day as Brent crude was down 0.65% to $75.18 per barrel, and West Texas Intermediate declined 1% to $71.84.

Precious metals failed to recover from massive losses in the previous session with gold falling another 0.2% $1,750 per ounce, and silver plummeting 1.4% to $22.6.

Bitcoin was not immune to volatility as the world’s largest crypto by market cap dived to $47,126 shortly before the opening bell on Wall Street, but then climbed to $47,400 at 9.47 a.m. EDT.
