US Officials Heighten Security Following Deadly New Orleans Attack

NEW YORK: In the wake of a deadly attack in New Orleans, local authorities across the United States have ramped up security measures to prevent further incidents. The move comes after a truck plowed through the French Quarter, killing at least 15 and injuring over 30 others early Wednesday morning.

According to Anadolu Agency, in Houston, the FBI and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office have launched a court-authorized search near Hugh Road and Crescent Peak Drive. FBI Houston confirmed the deployment of specialized teams, including SWAT, Crisis Negotiators, Bomb Technicians, and counterterrorism investigators, as part of the operation. The FBI has also imposed temporary flight restrictions and urged the public to stay clear of the area.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul detailed her administration’s increased counterterrorism investments, which include an additional $10 million allocated for state and local efforts to combat radicalization and enhance response capabilities. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of providing law enforcement with top-tier tools and training.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, in communication with NYPD Police Commissioner, announced heightened security across the city despite no immediate threats. Increased police presence has been noted at key locations like Trump Tower and Times Square. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the measures, stating that preliminary investigations show no current ties of the alleged perpetrator to New York City, but vigilance remains a priority.

The suspect in the New Orleans attack has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen and army veteran. The FBI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
