US exchanges close lower

ISTANBUL: Major stock exchanges closed Tuesday in the red.

The S and P 500 fell eight points, or 0.16% to 5,555. The index jumped 1.08% on Monday to register its best daily performance since early June.

The Dow, meanwhile, was down 57 points, or 0.14% to finish the session at 40,358.

The Nasdaq was off 10 points, or 0.06%, to 17,997 after it soared 1.58% the previous day.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 1.27% to 14.72. The 10-year US Treasury yield shed 0.17% to 4.254%.

The dollar index increased 0.13% to 104.45, while the euro lost 0.32% to $1.0854 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory with gold rising 0.5% to $2,408 per ounce and silver rising 0.35% to $29.23.

Oil prices were down more than 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $81.53 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $77.50.
