US Embassy in Baghdad comes under rocket attack

The US Embassy in Baghdad was attacked on Friday, with at least two rockets falling in its vicinity, but no staff members were injured, the mission in the Iraqi capital said in a statement.

The attack caused no injuries among staffers, the US-funded Alhurra broadcaster reported, citing a statement from the US Embassy, which also urged the Iraqi government to protect diplomatic missions in the country.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani directed the security forces to ‘capture and prosecute those responsible for the rocket attack aimed at the US Embassy in Iraq.’

The Iraqi official news agency INA quoted Al-Sudani as saying, “Those responsible for such attacks insult Iraq, its stability, and security,” stressing that they “do not represent the will of the Iraqi people.”

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which is the first against the US Embassy since Oct. 7.

Since Oct. 7, following Israel’s devastating onslaught on the Gaza Strip, US military bases in Iraq a
nd Syria have come under attack by at least 70 rocket and unmanned aerial vehicle strikes in an apparent protest against the US policy of supporting Israel.
