US Airstrikes in Yemen Target Multiple Houthi Leaders: Waltz Confirms Escalation

Washington: US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has announced that recent airstrikes in Yemen successfully targeted multiple Houthi leaders, marking a significant escalation in response to the Yemeni group’s attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. Waltz emphasized the decisive nature of these strikes, describing them as an “overwhelming response” that effectively took out key figures within the Houthi leadership.

According to Anadolu Agency, Waltz highlighted the distinction between these operations and those conducted under former President Joe Biden’s administration, noting a strategic focus on targeting Houthi leadership and holding Iran accountable. Waltz accused Iran of providing support through funding and training to the Houthis, facilitating their attacks against US warships.

The Houthi-run Health Ministry reported that at least 53 people were killed and 98 others injured during the US-UK airstrikes on Saturday. This military action follows a stern warning from US President Donald Trump, who threatened severe repercussions should the Iran-backed group persist in its attacks on Red Sea shipping.

The situation has been further complicated by the Houthis’ ultimatum to Israel on March 7, demanding the allowance of humanitarian aid into the blockaded Gaza Strip. They threatened to resume maritime operations against Israeli-linked vessels if their demands were not met. Since late 2023, the Houthis have been targeting Israeli-linked ships in the Red and Arabian seas, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden, using missiles and drones. These actions were initially halted following a ceasefire agreement in Gaza in January, but tensions have resurfaced due to Israel’s blockade on aid to Gaza since March 2.
