UNSG’s personal envoy on Cyprus visits London for meetings

UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, will be in London for contacts with UK officials on Thursday and Friday, before travelling to Cyprus again.

According to information, during her visit to London, Holguín is to meet with Minister for Europe, Leo Doherty.

UN Secretary-General’s Spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, has mentioned during a regular media briefing, that Holguin will be in London from March 7 to 8 for meetings with officials.

He added that the UK meetings follow her meetings in Athens and Ankara last month, thus concluding her first visits to the three guarantor powers.

Dujarric also mentioned that after London, Holguín will continue to Cyprus, where she is expected to meet with Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot Ersin Tatar.

During her stay in Cyprus, Holguín will also continue her contacts with a wide range of interlocutors, with a continued focus on listening to the concerns and aspirations of local actors, the UN official said.

C
yprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguín as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
