UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar will have on Tuesday a series of meetings with political party leaders on the island, during her second day of political engagements.
Commencing at 10:30, Holguín will meet Stefanos Stefanou, the General Secretary of left-wing AKEL party, at the party’s central headquarters.
Following this session, at 12:00, the UN envoy will meet with Nikolas Papadopoulos, the President of the Democratic Party (DIKO).
Later in the afternoon, at 16:00, Holguin is scheduled to engage in talks with Marinos Sizopoulos, the President of the socialists’ party EDEK.
Holguín’s agenda extends beyond political engagements, as she is expected, during her second visit to the island, to meet with representatives from civil society, journalists, and business leaders.
Moreover, she is expected to meet again with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in the forthcoming days, as part of the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resuming
the dialogue for a political solution to the Cyprus question.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
In January UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguin as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
