UNSG Personal Envoy on Cyprus to meet UK Minister for Europe on Thursday

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar will be in London on Thursday to kickstart the second round of meetings with the aim to determine whether and how talks can resume to settle the long-standing issue.

Holguín, former Foreign Minister of Colombia, will not however meet with Foreign Secretary David Cameron as was widely expected, the Cyprus News Agency learns.

In his stead Holguín will hold talks with the Minister for Europe Leo Docherty.

Lord Cameron is said to be visiting Germany on the day.

Sources have said that Holguin’s schedule in London could include further meetings with officials, although no such confirmation has been given.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguín as h
is personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
