UNSG Envoy will visit various capitals, Guterres’ spokesperson says

UNSG Envoy on Cyprus María Angela Holguín Cuellar will visit various capitals, SG’s Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told the press Wednesday.

During the press briefing in New York, Dujarric said that Colin Stewart, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus briefed the Security Council in closed consultations.

Replying to a question on the envoy’s agenda and when she will arrive to Cyprus and also if she will be visiting other capitals namely Ankara, Athens, London and Brussels, the spokesperson said that his understanding is that Holguin will be going to Cyprus in the next few weeks or so.

”I don’t have her detailed agenda, but it would seem to me that she would also stop in various capitals that have a stake or an influence on the situation”, he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.

The latest round of negotiations, in J
uly 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
