Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis is set to discuss Greece's membership, as a non-permanent member state, in the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 period, as well as progress regarding the contacts of the UN Secretary General's envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, during a meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in New York next week. Greece is seeking its third membership at the UNSC (after 1952-1953 and 2005-2006), and the vote that will take place on Thursday, June 6, at the General Assembly. During his visit to New York, the Greek Foreign Minister will be present while the election procedure takes place and will also hold meetings with counterparts from Denmark, Pakistan, Somalia and Panama. who are also candidate countries for non-permanent member state seats. Gerapetritis will meet, moreover, with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, with whom he is expected to discuss, inter alia, Greece's Security Council non permanent membership position, as well as p rogress regarding the contacts of the Secretary General's envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
