Leaders of the political parties sent messages for unity and hard work for the benefit of Cyprus and the EU, during their statements after the six MEPs the country elected were declared on Tuesday, following the elections on June 9. Democratic Rally (DISY) President Annita Demetriou, said that a difficult campaign has come to an end and hard work is now ahead of us and we are called to manage it. She said that DISY is a European and a responsible party and they have an even greater responsibility to respond to the challenges. She said that DISY MEPs, Loucas Fourlas and Michalis Hadjipantela, will do their best. Demetriou wished all MEPs 'good luck' , stressing that Cyprus comes first. AKEL Secretary General Stephanos Stephanou congratulated the authorities for a smooth election process. He said that his party's one MEP, Giorgos Georgiou, has a valuable experience of the functioning and action of the European Parliament and this experience will be used to enable AKEL to continue its work for Cyprus and its people. Stephanou noted that AKEL will work for better societies in the EU and for the benefit of the citizens so that we can have better days for both Europe and Cyprus. He also said that AKEL will seek cooperation with the other MEPs because Cyprus and its people are above all. Independent MEP Fidias Panayiotou expressed his joy and satisfaction for his election, adding that a lot has been said so far and from now on we will see deeds. ELAM Chair Christos Christou thanked those who elected the party's one MEP, who amounted to more than 40,000 people. He said that their MEP will join the party of European Conservatives and Reformists and will do everything possible to defend the interests of the Republic of Cyprus. Democratic Rally (DIKO) President Nicholas Papadopoulos thanked the citizens who participated in the elections, despite being a difficult and complex process and the Interior Ministry for a smooth procedure. He congratulated all the MEPs noting that from now on they are above all representati ves of Cyprus in the European Parliament and their primary duty is to serve and best represent the interests of our country. He added that their MEP Costas Mavrides is member of the second largest political group of the European Parliament , the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats and will continue to work for the interests of Cyprus and its people. He said that there are a lot of challenges namely inflation, a rise in prices, energy and the Cyprus issue and the efforts to resume the peace talks and DIKO will continue to work to this end and to be present in addressing all challenges.
