The reports of the UN Secretary General speak for themselves and UNFICYP stands by them, Spokesperson Aleem Siddique has told CNA on Wednesday.
Invited to comment on statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s press release on the adoption of the resolution renewing UNFICYP’s mandate for a further year, Siddique said “on the range of issues that have been raised, those were reported on in the SG’s report and we stand by them.”
He added, “the report speaks for itself, we stand by the report.”
Commenting on the contacts the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General, María Ángela Holguín Cuellar will have on Wednesday, Siddique said she will have separate meetings with the two negotiators from both sides.
She will also meet separately civil society representatives from both sides.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotia
tions, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
