NEW YORK: UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has called upon the international community to support the full restoration of Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity, emphasizing the urgent need for an immediate cessation of acts of aggression, including those by Israel. Pedersen highlighted the transformative changes occurring in Syria and the critical need for a stable future.
According to Anadolu Agency, Pedersen outlined the profound shifts in governance, military dynamics, the formidable task of reconstruction, and the ongoing economic crisis that Syria faces. Despite these challenges, he noted glimmers of hope as families long separated by conflict begin to reunite and some return to homes previously believed to be lost.
Pedersen commended the resilience of the Syrian people, stating, “Despite enduring unimaginable hardships, the spirit of the Syrian people remains unbroken, and their hope for a better tomorrow is truly inspiring.” He pointed to the significant release of thousands of innocent civilians from detention in Sednaya Prison as a monumental development, while acknowledging the unresolved fate of tens of thousands of missing persons as a continuing national tragedy.
The envoy emphasized that the political transition in Syria must be Syrian-led and inclusive, with strong international support. “The road ahead must be navigated by Syrians themselves, with robust support from the international community,” he asserted. This transition, Pedersen noted, should ensure comprehensive representation and uphold human rights, particularly focusing on the rights of women and girls.
Pedersen stressed the importance of establishing a new constitutional framework and conducting free, fair elections in line with international standards and Security Council Resolution 2254. He called for a comprehensive transitional justice process to ensure accountability and reparation, which he believes are vital for fostering social cohesion and achieving lasting peace.
He described the situation in Syria as one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, underscoring the UN’s commitment to mobilizing resources and expertise to adapt to the changing needs of the population and support recovery efforts.
