UN Secretary General’s personal envoy for the Cyprus issue Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar is in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus on Thursday for meetings.
Aleem Siddique, UNFICYP Spokesperson told CNA that the Holguin “is continuing her outreach across the island” with meetings today in Iskele (Turkish occupied Trikomo) with the so called “mayor’.
She is also due to meet representatives from the tourism industry in Turkish occupied Kyrenia.
On Friday, the Holguin will continue her contacts in the government controlled areas of the Republic.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguín in January as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the C
yprus issue.
