The UN Human Rights Committee has noted the progress in the Cypriot legal order regarding the protection and implementation of civil and political rights, a press release by the Office of the Law Commissioner, says. The announcement notes that Law Commissioner, Louiza Christodoulidou-Zannetou, was recently in Geneva heading a group of government officials to represent the Republic of Cyprus in the presentation/examination of the 5th periodic report of Cyprus, before the United Nations Human Rights Committee. It is noted that the Human Rights Committee which comprises independent human rights experts, is responsible for monitoring the implementation and promoting the rights of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The UN Committee asked a large number of questions related ia to the prohibition of discrimination, hate crimes, gender equality, violence against women, domestic violence, human trafficking, torture, inhumane treatment, conditions of detention, citizenship, refugees, asylum seekers, religious minorities, voting rights. The press release says that all the members of the Cypriot delegation, with teamwork and thorough preparation, answered in detail and informed the Committee about the implementation of the Covenant in Cyprus. "The United Nations Committee has already expressed its satisfaction for what was reported by our delegation and noted the progress that has been made in the Cypriot legal order with regard to the protection and implementation of civil and political rights," the press release stresses. Following the UN Committee's observations, the Cypriot Commissioner will submit her recommendations to the government regarding further actions that the Republic of Cyprus may take to strengthen and better implement civil and political rights in Cyprus.
