ISTANBUL: Ukraine on Friday said that Russian forces attempted to break through the country’s defenses in the northeastern region of Kharkiv, opening a new front in the over two-year-long conflict that is focused in the country’s east and south.
A statement by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said that Russia increased its airstrikes overnight near the city of Vovchansk, located about 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) from the Russian border and about 73 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Kharkiv city.
Claiming that guided bombs were used during the attacks, the statement said there was an attempt to break through Ukraine’s defenses under the cover of armored vehicles at approximately 5:00 a.m. (0200GMT).
‘As of now, these attacks have been repulsed, battles of varying intensity continue,’ the statement further said, adding that reserve units were sent to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses on the front line in the region.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synyehubov said on Telegram that 21 settlements in the region, as well as the
region’s administrative center, were hit by Russian airstrikes.
‘We call on the civilian population of border settlements to stay in shelters,’ Synyehubov added.
Russia has not yet commented on Ukraine’s statements.
